Any info on what these do: i.e. before / after screen shots?

I don't have screenshots here, but install the 16bit updates right
away! It makes the tracks look much better! He also made some great
tree updates, especially the Ring is great after installing his
update.
The only disadvantage of this update is that all the other tracks look
***once you're used to the 16bit tracks :)

I take it that you just dump the .mip files in the appropriate track
folder?

Yep! for the ring also download those Nurntrees files or whatever
their names were and also extract them to your gpl\tracks\nurnburg
map.

I didn't notice an fps drop, but I allways have 36fps in GPL, so maybe
my system is fast enough and doesn't show an fps decrease.
Theoretically 16bit textures should have a slight hit on fps, so just
backup your old track maps first before installing the updates.

...

16-bit? I thought it would be an upgrade from 16-bit to 32(24)-bit?
What was it before, 256 colors?

Damn, a Geforce3, full detail, but my PII-400/Win2K still runs at
10fps on a full field in Monza. :( Have to review those 'My GPL
stutters' threads...

Your GeForce3 is wasted on a PII 400.  GPL loves cpu cycles.  I get

Fancy a swap :-)

Yeah, it seems so. I got about the same performance with my Voodoo2.
:)
Still, it's better than the other cards I had (TNT2Ultra/Geforce2MX),
if you program in an OpenGL way.

No sorry, got a TNT2Ultra lying around here on my desk doing nothing
already. ;-)

GPL - 16 bit textures.

by SpeedFree » Sun, 28 Oct 2001 01:54:00

I run GPL on a PII 333 + Voodoo2 and the 16bit textures havent had a
noticable effect on the FPS. I've only installed the Monza and Silverstone
ones so far so I can't say anything about the other ones.

I get 36fps all the time except at the back of a full grid of AI cars, when
it drops to around 30fps. BUT.. I do only run the detail bias 1 click from
the left (just to get rid of the square wheels)!! Lower detail bias is a
good way to improve the fps (Ok, I know my system is real slow... hell I
used to run GPL on a PII 233 and Voodoo1!!!

Good tips for getting the fps up to 36 on slower systems are lower detail
bias, lower mirror refresh settings and editing the app.ini to make
soundquality=0.

So I reckon the 16 bit textures are definitely worth a try.

Lol SpeedFreek.

Worse! Many textures in GPL are 4-bit!

PII 400 and a Geoforce3? The problem is very obvious here I think..

Running GPL on a ol' coal-fired PII400 here with a V3-2000, which I reckon
is about the perfect GPL/vid card for this processor. After 3 years of the
same GPL installation and just about every track update available for every
track to date, I've noticed no fps loss with Darkgreen's 16-bit updates. My
fps still suck when I'm at the back of a grid, mid 20s or so, but jump right
up to 36 as soon as traffic thins out.

Get 'em.
