N4: 16 bit or 32 bit color?

Can somebody explain what they are suggesting in the N4 readme.  Are they
saying you get the best graphics with settings at 32 bit color but best
performance at 16 bit?

Thanks

The way I understand this is, We should all stick to 16 bit, But as soon as
128 mg video cards are the norm some day we should then all be able to run
the 32 with out any slow down. They are just making sure the game doesn't
get out dated soon.

Yes, your best performance will be with 16 bit. You probably won't see
enough of a difference to warrant the performance hit you'll get running in
32 bit, plus today's systems aren't quite up to the task  to run in 32 bit
with all graphics on.

That's what it looks like to me.  I have a Geforce 256 32mb and after trying
most of the D3D and Open Gl settings, the best tradeoff I get between
performance and appearance is OpenGl 1152x864x16 bit on a P3/800/256mb.

ahead, 4 behind.  Draw ahead at 75%, mirrors medium.  I was amazed at how
little difference I could discern between 16 and 32 bit depth.

Haven't seen the readme but that's the way how computer graphics
work. Less colors means less data to move around, thus better
performance. Obviously, less colors also means less visual quality,
you have to decide according to your personal preferences. Or get a
fast enough machine so that you can have both. :-)
