GTR 2002 32-bit colour

Hi,

Just lately I've noticed that GTR wasn't running as smoothly as it should.
Even the spinning car in the menu has been jerking every second or so.
After a couple of hours of messing around, I tried running the game in
16-bit and instantly it started running perfectly smooth again.  (BTW I'm
using a Ti4600)  The strange thing is that with 16-bit, 4x AA, I get a
triangle performance of 38m/s and the game is perfectly smooth.  But with
32-bit, No AA, I get a triangle performance of 48m/s and yet the game is
jerky.  It doesn't make sense.

I tried reinstalling F1 2002 from scratch and nothing changed.  I've got a
dual boot between WinME and WinXP - switching OS didn't make any difference.
I've tried nVidia drivers 40.72,30.82 & 29.42 and no difference (except
29.42 was a bit slower overall)

Anyone else had poor performance in 32-bit?

I don't have ME or XP so anything I say would be a guess, but....what
was your desktop resolution/color depth set to?  Have you recently upgraded
to dx9?  Any other changes?

Yep and it should be that way. At least that is the way it was explained to
me awhile back. :)

The reason your fill rate is down is because of the AA. If you were running
the same screen res in both color depths your actually rendering a much
larger picture in 16 bit. For example if you are rendering a 1024x768 image
in 16 bit with 4x AA you are processing 50,331,648 bits per frame. Now at
1024x768x32 bit your are processing 25,165,824 bits or half the amount.
That's why the fill rate is actually higher in 32 bit color.  The down side
is the textures used for 32 bit color are larger and will put a harder hit
on the video card memory.  If you have not you may want to try overclocking
the memory on your video card.

Yeah, but with AA off I get the same triangle rate in both 16-bit and 32-bit
indicating that the CPU (1800+) is the limiting factor.  32 bit remains
jerky while 16-bit is perfecty smooth...  I'd be happy to run in 16-bit if
the menus didn't***up.  Every other game I've got runs just as fast in
32-bit on my 4600.

The menu problems with 16bit color is fixed in the upcoming patch. The
readme is in this thread (about half way down the 1st page):
