16 bit graphics

16 bit graphics

I just upgraded my memory and now have 80 megs of RAM... I know the
rendition boards "like" 16 megs of ram to access 16 bit graphics... Is
there any way I can alter setting to utilize the 16 bit graphics?

Much Thanks!

I am confused Tom.. Thanks for straightening me out... what I'm
basically concerned with is ... am I getting the best I can out of my
video board (Screaming 3d).  Would I have to adjust anything.. but I
guess with 80 megs of RAM... I've got the optimum video graphics I can
get...
THANKS!

Just thought I should make sure you know that yes, N2 (RendDma) does
automaticly load 8 bit textures if you have 24MB ram or more. My frame
rate suffers considerably when I use 8 bit textures (with my
configuration). I get an average of 5+ FPS when I go from 8 to 4 bit
textures (Marty gets 9FPS)! 4 bit textures look plenty good to me so I'd
rather have the extra FPS.

Jim Sokoloff said that he believed this would be addressed in the patch.
I would guess you'll be allowed to decide whether or not you want to run
8 bit textures if you have 24MB of ram or more. Right now, you have to
do something like load smartdrive to make N2 think you don't have enough
memory for 8 bit textures if you want the higher frame rates.

FYI, Julian Data mentioned on 3/17 that there were traction differences
between the two modes also. I haven't had time to verify that on my
system as I'm still playing on Hawaii alot.

ICR2-3D?...This is the only one with 16-bit images...Just a thought.  =)

I'd rather have the extra FPS too than have a choppy frame rate.  The
smoother the less one has (in my opinion) to mess up:)

I'm wondering how the difference in the two modes would alter the
physics of the game...

What is the proper usage of Smartdrive in the autoexec.bat to cause the
machine to think it has less than 24 MEGS of RAM?

I can state with almost 100% absolute, bet my entire net-worth (not
that much money, really) that any differences in lap times are a
result of the frame rate differences. (The higher the frame rate, the
better you can drive the car, because you can see and therefore "feel"
what's happening with the car in a much more timely fashion...)
