I can't get 16-bit sound with NFS!

    Please help.  I have a Packard Bell Pentium 90 with 8 MB of RAM,
standard SB-16 compatible sound card, 2X CD-ROM, and SVGA.  I am using
a boot disk to start NFS.

Here're the autoexec.bat and config.sys setups I'm using:

autoexec.bat:

PROMPT $P$G
PATH C:\NETMANAG;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\
LH /L:1,23424 C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001 /M:30 /E
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4
SET GALAXY=A220 I5 D1 K10 P530 T6
SET SOUND=C:\SOUND16A

config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM MIN=8192 D=64
BUFFERS=40
FILES=50
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,55168 =C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE.SYS
DEVICEHIGH /L:1,13424 =C:\SOUND16A\DRIVERS\CDMKE.SYS /P:340 /D:MSCD0001
DEVICEHIGH /L:0;1,8112 /S =C:\DOS\POWER.EXE

Please tell me what to change to get 16-bit sound.  Right now I can
only get 8-Bit mono.

Unless you have a notebook computer (which you don't if its a PB), you can
take that last line out of the config.sys file (the one that is loading
POWER.EXE).  It conserves batter life of notebook computers; it is a
waste to use on desktops.  My Packard Bell came with the same driver
loading each time.  Also, your buffers and files in the config.sys seem
higher than they need to be.

As far as the sound, I have not noticed anything by using
"set dmxoptions=-phase" in the autoexec.bat file, but it is supposed to have
some effect on sound quality I think.  I doubt that gives you 16-bit sound
either though.  The sound card that comes with the PB's are deceiving.
Even the directory name "/SOUND16A" is deceiving.  I tried for 8 months to
get 16-bit sound on my PB, but I gave up after I dropped the PB speakers
and routed the sound through my stereo.

You might want to make a boot disk for your computer.  This can be done by
putting a disk in your floppy drive (probably drive A: on yours), and
typing "format a: /s".  After its done, copy the config.sys and autoexec.bat
files to the floppy, then edit those files with the changes.  Just make
sure you edit the files on the floppy, not the hard drive.

Hope that helps you some.
