Spec for GP3 machine

Once upon a time I was rather quick on GP2, and am looking forward to
GP3 - but it's going to mean a system upgrade.

I'm planning on going to an Athlon 750 + suitable motherboard, 128Mb
RAM, but I'm not sure about the graphics card.

Is it really worth going for a name card like a Voodoo 5000, or will
something like a 3D Blaster TNT2 do it?

All it's for is GP3!

I'd bet a TNT2 or voodoo3 will ve the minimum with which to enjoy GP3,
with v5 and Geforce 2 better, and the optimum setup... isn't available
yet...

Don't rush it. The Athlon is oke, but I think it's wise to wait for the
Nvidia MX boards to get the best graphics for the money.

From what I've seen, to get 25+fps with GP3, you only need a 600Mhz
CPU with a graphics accelerator.

Do the graphics cards differ *that much* from each other?

The demo that was shown on various shows was reported as running on a
Matrox G400 card.

Anyway: the only safe approach is to wait at least a week after it has
been released and read performance reports over here. At least that's
what *I* will do :-)

You also have to keep in mind that there will be a (more taxing?)GP4
probably within less than a year, and GP5 (even GP6?) the next
year(s).

Personally, I want to be able to play at least the next 3
"incarnations" with my next system.

At the moment my preference seems to be to exploit my current system
to the maximum and wait for the real upgrade until DDR-RAM
motherboards appear at the end of this year/start of next year.

GeForceII MX for something like $120. With a bit of luck, it will

- run GP3 "ok" in something like 800*600
- run even GP4 if that one exploits the T&L in the GeForceII MX,
something much more likely if the *cheap* GeForce II MX seriously
launches T&L-support in games.

=> enables me to wait a little and buy a system with 266MHz DDR-RAM

Well, it depends on

- the game: is it processor intensive or graphics-intensive?
- the game: does it exploit special features of the card like T&L?
- does the graphics card's performance "scale" with the CPU
performance?
- is the graphics card in combination with driver good at D3D (the 3D
API GP3 uses) or not?

Difficult to predict all these factors, so wait for user reports of
the performance on different combinations of CPU/graphics card

I'm going up to a 750 Athlon, with 128Mb 100Mhz RAM. After including
something like a 3D Blaster, it will cost about 400 (uk pounds)
including tax - about 550 dollars.

A lot of money for one game, isn't it :-)

I can almost smell the lap records though  hahahaha

And there are those, like me, who are hoping it is scaleable, like GP2 and
GP1, to run it on a lowly PIII-500.

I was reading an interview, and it appears it's much more scaleable
than previous versions. Lots of tricks in the game engine...

Yes, you were *very* quick!!! Hiya Jon, long time no e-mail....!

8-)

I've just asked the exact same question, see the RAS thread titled "GP3
forcing an upgrade (again)"

I'm thinking along the same lines as you regarding an upgrade, great
minds and all that!

BTW, check out my webpage, some overclocking stuff, GP3 stuff, and
general driving game/sim stuff on there to browse at.....

Hope to swap a few laps with you at GP3 (especially if on-line play is
developed?)

Hah! There are some of us who hope it will run acceptably on the
box spec - P111 450 (or AMD K6-2 450 in my case) as I can't
afford to upgrade my mobo/CPU...

Anyway I'd rather upgrade to a force wheel (any recommendations?

Oh boyyyyyyyy, is that the "minimum" specs on the GP3 box, or the
"recommended" specs?

Sorry - that's the recommended spec. I don't recall the minimum,
but if it's as 'optimistic' as the one for MS Flightsim 2K...  :(
