Le Mans 24 hours machine specs?

I just bought the new Le Mans 24 hours game, and tried to run it on my
machine. The framerate is terrible, particularly round any corners
where there are large crowds, and on the start/finish straight! I am
running it at 640by480 and 16 bit, and it looks terrible too. Also I
can't get my Momo steering wheel to work at all, even after setting it
up in the controller menu.
My machine spec is well above the recommended level (1GHz Athlon,
768MB RAM, Radeon 8500 with latest drivers).
Is anyone else having problems with this game?
