Today I take a look at Infogrames' newest racing title, Le Mans: 24 Hours
(or Test Drive Le Mans in the US) with help of the Press Release and some
screenhots. Unfortunately this game has just been delayed from December 6th
to December 10th (Release Dates page updated).

Marco Maas also let me know that the German magazine PCGames features a
rolling demo of 24h Le Mans. "The demo looks great and you can choose your
graphics card, but you can't control the cars."

Eutechnyx say on their forums that the rolling demo will be available on the
Internet some time after it has been released on the UK PCFormat Cover Disk
and a playable demo is following soon as well.

Personally, I thought the rolling demo looked rather suspect, with cars
darting around in a rather unnatural way.

Reading from the features list at the site sure makes it *sound* exciting
but somehow the phrase "Realistic AI and physics model, unsurpassed by any
other racing simulation" makes me doubtful. That sounds just a little too
much ad-speak for me to take seriously. The whole first look really reads
like a press release rather than any sort of preview/review.

We didn't make that features list. It's a features list from Eutechnyx. We
never claimed it to be a preview/review. It's a First Look, which means we
list the features and show the screenshots developers give us. As clearly
stated in our announcement and on the main page.

If this game is anything like the "thing" I tried at Le Mans in June... many
people will be disappointed here...

Too damn shame Circuit de La Sarthe didn't sell the rights to someone who
knows how to make sims... and not games...

Last thing I heard was that the GAME won't even feature an in-car view....
:((

Anyone here feel like doing a SCGT-type ramble all over again? :)

As written on High Gear (by Infogrames I believe):

"Le Mans: 24 Hours has been released for the PlayStation some time ago. The
game will be released for the PC in Europe on December 10th and the 29th of
March, 2000 for the US, named Test Drive Rally."

Test Drive RALLY????

Is this a typo or what??

If it aint... I beilive that "title" sums it all up....  dont expect to much
here guys.

Oops. Test Drive Le Mans. It's just a marketing decision. They decided that
naming the game Test Drive Le Mans in the US would work better. It has
nothing to do with other Test Drive games, this is a different developer,
just like with Test Drive Rally and Test Drive Cycles.

We never claimed it to be a sim. Simply because we can't tell right now,
because the game isn't available yet. First Looks are written with the info
developers and publishers give us, just like with any other site.

Great decision.  Test Drive 4 was the worst drving game I ever put on my puter.
About as smart as naming it Baby Seal Killer Le Mans.  Not associated with
seal brains on the snow of course.  Yeah, I'll be first in line to buy Human
Rights Violations Le Mans or whatever...

I read the first review in a german magazine and it gave an overall rating
of about 75%, stating very clearly, that the physics provide only fun for
fans of ARCADE racers...
I would not mind about that, if they only would NOT try to betray us with
such ****ing bull**** like the quoted sentence.

Especially when you find out that the console version was released first.

Where is the console version of GPL?

Chances are it WILL break a few human rights! At least if you're unlucky
enough to fall into the marketing hype.

well, you would need 4 PSX to compute only the physics engine, even the
DreamCast would be not enough powerfull, The PSX2 could be enough powerfull
to handle GPL, plus PSX2 has USB connector ( wheels ? ).

But console maket will never ever be a market for sims games , NEVER !

It's easy - if you buy the game (when it get's released) and think that
the physics is less realistic than GPL, sue them under Advertising
Standards.
