Anybody have a good suggestion for a new sound card, my SB Live has a
terrible crackling sound in N2002.
I know this seems to be a common problem.  So If anyone has a good Audio
Card recommendation I think I will just go buy one.

Thanks,

Is 3D audio checked. You can try messing around with the SB settings.

If you have a VIA chipset main board, check your BIOS to make sure the "PCI
to DRAM Prefetch" setting is
Enabled.  When it is disabled is can cause crackling.  Read this on a VIA
chipset message board awhile back?

Developed the same problem with my SB Live (MP3+5.1) after I upgraded to
WinXP Pro running N4. I never could find a fix with drivers or bios, I ended
up getting an SB Audigy and the problem went away. (also think the Via
chipset on my mobo was involved...) N2002 now also sounds just fine.

Good luck.

I made the following edits to the core.ini file on the demo, which
completely cured the poppping problem I had.  I don't know if it works in
the full game as I don't have it yet.  I'm thinking it will though.

Sound]
allow_buffer_recreation=1                ; re-create sound buffers to
improve quality
enable_3d_interpolation=1                ; enable volume interpolation for
3d sound
force_default_buffer_size=6              ; Set forced buffer size in 1/36
second units. Define a value of 3 or larger
interpolationValue=0

Excellent, I have this problem too, and can't wait to get home and try these
settings out to see if they help me.

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is a nice soundcard.

I'll second the Santa Cruz.  Had a SB Audigy and was getting the crackling
in N4 and the demo.  Very clear now with the Santa Cruz.

Can somebody confirm this with the full game?  You could be getting a
medal for this John, good work.
Sound popping in Papyrus games goes back to ....maybe even N2.
Thanks...post this every day ...:)

I tried those settings in the full game, and the popping/crackling problem
improved, but didn't go away entirely. It is quite a bit better though.

Try going with a higher number than 6 for the default buffer region Radio.
At some point you'll see intolerable delays in causes and effects, however.
I could have gone higher than 6 without causing a problem, but it turned out
that 6 was the minimum number I could use.  Delays set in at 12 or higher,
if I recall.

I enabled the "PCE to DRAM Prefetch" in my BIOS and the popping went away
completely.

Do you have ACPI enabled in your bios? I've read that ACPI can cause
crackling on some systems. Also, if you have an option to adjust PCI latency
in the mb bio then try playing around with that as I have also read this can
be a cause of crackling sound too. SB Live! is known to rob the PCI bus and
that is the most likely reason why people get crackling on that card.
