SB Live Sound Card Users - HeadsUP..!!!

by Tom Pabs » Wed, 27 Oct 1999 04:00:00

There's new drivers for the SB Live sound card on the Creative LiveWare
website......."LiveWare Version 3.0"......(previous was version 2.0...patched up
to version 2.1)

I'm not sure how long these have been "posted"....I visit about once or twice a
month....just saw them this morning.  I can't put the URL up here for the
site.......because you have to be "registered" to enter and DL from the Creative
site......but its free so do it if you haven't already.

This is just a "heads up"......for all you SB Live sc users.

TP

P.S.  For all you N3 racers.......I will have the "road course" version of the
High Gear N3 SoundPak available on the High Gear website (www.simracingnews.com)
on Nov 1st.  This will also have the "spotter" sounds enhanced (increased volume
and "presence") for those running surround sound systems and having trouble
hearing the spotter over the engine sounds........   The current High Gear N3
SoundPak available at High Gear now (and for the last month or so) is an engine
sound better suited for the super speedways....like Tally and IMS.....and on Nov
1 that SoundPak will be changed to include the new spotter enhanced sounds also.
The enhanced fx sounds (gear shift, crash, wheel spin, etc) will be the same in
the new "road course" SoundPak.  So, this means you can archive a copy of the
sound16.dat file under a folder called "SuperSpeedway N3 Engines"....and another
under "Road Course N3 Engines"....then just paste and copy the one you want to
run into your N3/Sound directory....bingo...you've changed engines!

These SoundPaks for N3 are enhanced specifically for the SB Live and MX300 sound
cards....but they can be used by any sound card/speaker system.....you'll just
not get the full benefit of all of the enhancements.

My apologies to the several thousand of you who have downloaded the N3 SoundPak
from High Gear....and asked me if I could do something to help the N3 spotter
sound's volume.  This has taken longer than I thought....since there are about
580 individual spotter .wav files and each one takes about 5 minutes to
re-record and increase the base volume!  The "road course" engines have been
done for some time now....but the spotter sound files are dragging me behind!
Sorry.

P.S.S.  There's a GPL SoundPak available at the High Gear website too......for
those of you who have recently obtained GPL or have reinstalled it.  Nearly 15
thousand people have dl'd the GPL SoundPak....so you might want to give it a
try.

The new SB LiveWare vers. 3.0 drivers are fantastic. My sound is so much better
than before. It was really worth it. Too bad N3 and GPL don't support EAX. Oh
well.

Thanks for the heads up Tom. Btw, do you have an environment settings
file for N3 you might post for us?

Hey, Tom Pabst!

THANKS for the new drivers tip-off -- and a request, too ...

You would be doing all of the SB Live owners who read this forum a
TREMENDOUS service if you would do a quick edit on your recent Crew Chief's
article on your new N3 soundpack.

There is very useful information on taming the SB Live and modifying sounds
in the article, and many who race sims other than N3 (like the die-hard GPL
fans) could benefit enormously.  I'm one of those guys who had no idea why
the sound got lower and shittier every time I fired up GPL.

Hate to suggest more work for a very busy guy, but that is really terrific
"generic" information that many in addition to N3 drivers can benefit from.

Thanks for all of your contributions to our little community of ***ists,
and thanks for the note on the drivers.  I gonna get 'em now.

You do not need to be registered to get this download -- just tried it from
a PC with no SB hardware on it nor has it ever been used to register or
access the SB site.

URLs are:

http://scripts.soundblaster.com/registereddownload/download2.asp

or try:

http://www.sblive.com/liveware/get.html (you'll have to agree to the
"agreement")

Creative's recommended fastest site is (URL for Win9x base software):

ftp://creative-labs-ftp3.swbell.net/liveware3/lw30full_9x.zip

A further heads-up to people:

There are some installation issues for this release. *Some* users are having
troubles, among these:

1) readme.txt states to remove all SBLive software. You may not be able to
install Playcenter. Run the installer and let it remove old versions.

2) If your temp directory is different than the default (mine is h:\temp)
the installer will unpack the files and stop. You'll have to open the temp
folder and rename setup.ex_ to setup.exe and double-click that.

Give alt.comp.periphs.soundcard.sblive a read before attempting the install
of these drivers.

Your mileage may vary, don't take SBLive is you are pregnant or lactating,
may cause hair loss and nausea.

Dale.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you want me to do.....when you asked ,
".........do a quick edit...."  Is there something you needed added to the
article on High Gear?  Let me know....I'll try to do it for you.

Regards,

Tom Pabst

Sorry, Tom, the request was kinda convoluted.  I'll do it this way ...

Hey, SB Live owners!

Be sure to check out Tom Pabst's brilliant new sound pack for N3 at High
Gear --  even if you DON'T drive N3.  In Tom's write-up, there are some
great tips on getting the most out of your SB Live card that apply to other
sims as well.  My GPL sound had gotten shitty, but after reading Tom's
article I was able to restore the sound and IMPROVE it.  It's well worth
reading!

Kurt Steinbock

There, Tom -- no need for a new article!  And my thanks, again!
