GPL Locking Up in menus. (after a new install)

by And » Sat, 06 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Help!
Reformated my HD, reinstalled Win98 w/ all the updates.  Installed
GPL, now when I get into the menu to enter my name, or the screen to
calibrate my wheel, (if I make it that far) the game locks up hard.
(I have to do a cold reboot)
I've made a few changes since the last time it worked. (before the
format)  Added a MX300 sound card, running DX 6.1, and updated my
trackman marble mouse drivers to 8.2.
It worked fine with the MX300 before, so that leaves DX 6.1 or the
mouse drivers.
Running a P2-333 with a CL 3DFX card, and a Viper 550 TNT card.  (with
the new reference drivers)  Going to try the opengl patch now, but I
doubt that will help.  Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Andy

How many times does this have to answered? Why don't you have a look at
previous messages? There have been hundreds on this subject.
Get Glide 2.53 from http://grandprix2.ga-sports.com/gpl/patches.htm put it
in your GPL folder and hey ho everything is OK!

It works for 99.9% of people that's for sure. Your problem is obviously not
the same one.

Well it was working fine with no problems, until I loaded the new 3dfx
drivers then everything fell apart. lock ups flashing patches on screen, and
screen hangs.

Not always Iain,
I did exactly what you're saying(i knew a long time ago,but at that time
i was not having any problem) because my computer began to crash badly
while playing GPL.It was useless going back to 2.53 drivers. Now i'm
suspecting that my mini ATX case is too small to the hardware i have(2 X
voodoo2, 2 cd drives ,allinwonder,pci modem ,192mb ram,etc),and the
system is getting overheated.
That is to let you think ,that almost everyone's got a different system
from the others ,and that the same sympton can have many different
causes.
Just try to be more polite next time cause maybe in the future you can
be in the same situation as Andy .Did you ever think that maybe it's his
first time on this RAS?(and by your answer ,maybe the last)

Do you get a frozen mouse pointer right on the first screen? I had to remove
the Logitech MouseWare drivers and use the generic 3button mouse drivers.
After that it never locked up again. IF you're using MouseWare, it could be
worthwhile to try that.

The drivers often have a 'Glide sweep' utility, which finds any other
versions of the glide drivers and renames them.  Perhaps some people run
this util and dont realize it will cause the drivers in the gPL folder to be
renamed, thus reverting to the newer drivers installed in the system.

Just a thought,

Sorry Rafael, but I can't agree with you. The whole point of an NG is to
have a reference database of queries, solutions, information etc. that can
easily be searched. The quesion of GPL freezing, and installing 2.53 in GPL
folder has been dealt with literally hundreds of times since GPL was
released. If  Andy had looked just a little he would have found the answer.
If every plea for help was repeated over and over, we would be swamped with
hundreds more messages every day. Please people use the NG properly.
