New computer and N4 = Help!

by Ryan » Sat, 11 Aug 2001 17:17:08

Hi,
I haven't been around this newsgroup for quite awhile, but I hope someone
has had a similar problem and can help me fix it.  I just built a new Athlon
1 GHz (266 FSB) computer with 256MB of ram with a 40 gig hard drive and 32
meg Radeon.  When I install Nascar 4 and play the game for the first time, I
get between 50 and 75 fps around Daytona with mostly everything on and at
800x600x16 in Direct3D.  However (and this is the weird part!) if I exit the
game and then restart the game, my fps drops to between 30 and 50 :-(
Restarting or shutting down the computer makes no difference at all, I only
get the really good frame rates for the first play of the game.  Any
ideas???  If it helps I installed the game on the 3rd partition, which I
made to be 20 gig, with windows on a 4 gig and a 16 gig for mp3's and such.
GPL runs perfect on this machine, and so does Viper Racing and NFS3, so I
can't help but think it is just an N4 problem.  I tried updating the Via
4-in-1 drivers to the latest but no change, and openGL runs even worse. I
patched to 1.1 and also no change.
Hoping for higher fps,
Ryan
