new computer-N4-Nvidia help needed

OK gurus need some advice. Bought a new Sony Vaio desktop. Price was
right...drawback is video card. TNT 2 model 64 32 meg. Can't replace it for a
year without voiding warranty on the computer. When I first loaded N4 d3d gave
35-38 fps with all features on and world view at half. Decided to try open GL
and got 19-22. Switched back to d3d and now get 22-27. Also now when racing AL
the car wont come up to speed. Sounds like engine is sputtering, almost like
hitting a rev limiter but much too soon. All happened after I tried open GL.
All was fine before. Can Rivatuner be used by a computer moron? Sure don't want
to***it up further. Can't follow Tom Pabst set up cause this card doesn't
have the advanced menu. All I have under advanced settings is "overlay
controls".  I got this framerate on my 400 celery with 16 meg card. Thanks in
advance for any and all suggestions.
System:
Windows XP Home ed
1.7 Pentium 4
256 133 ram
Nvidia Riva TNT 2 model 64 video card
Analog devices integrated sound
directx 8.1
80 gig HD blah blah blah
Thanks again

Any chance you can get the place you bought it from to install a better
Video card?

Sorry, can't help with the problem though :-(

Have you tried the later Nvidia drivers, like the 21.83's?  What drivers are
you using now? You should be able to tell in the nvidia tab on your
properties. You may want to go to nvidia.com and grab the 21.83 official
drivers.  Be sure and follow the instructions for installing them.
You probably have vsynch enabled in OpenGL,  and /or antialiasing on. The
Nvidia drivers will give you the options to enable/disable these and more in
both opengl and d3d.
Open GL should give you the best performance in N4.

That video card is an incredible bottleneck in
the company of the p4.  I would ask the shop
if they can help you out with a Ge-Force
upgrade.

Thanks folks. As for the store upgrading the card their response was that the
warranty would still be good "if the new video card isn't the problem". Thanks
for the driver suggestion Don, I'll give em a try. One good feature of Win XP
is the driver rollback feature. If the new ones don't improve performance I can
just roll back to the original. Any experience with Rivatuner...out there?

Hmm, not you shouldn't get flickering.
Not sure what might be causing that.

Could be too high or too low a refresh rate. 60-85 Hz seems to be the normal
sweet spot.
