Need N4- new computer help (long)

by Daddyo6 » Mon, 01 Oct 2001 11:52:19

First of all system is:
ASUS A7A266 MB flashed with latest bios
AMD Athlon 1200-266 mhz processor
128 meg DDR ram
Nvidia Geoforce 2MX 64 meg Vid card
Compac DVD Rom
Mitsumi  CD Writer
Soundblaster PCI sound card
CPU fan-video card fan-extra case exhaust fan
TM Pro digital wheel  USB- patch from TM site installed
Alcatel Speedtouch USB DSL Modem
Win 2000 OS
Problems: N4 video will freeze after 10 mins or so but audio continues as if
nothing has happened. Nothing like hearing my spotter ask if I'm allright 10
sec after video freeze. Must manually reboot system to continue. Followed Tom
Pabst's Nvidia Video card setup guide and am getting 50-90 fps when running. As
mentioned, extra fans all around and side off case off. MB temp stays around
130c. Non N4 problem is that this thing will reboot at will. Can just be surfin
the web and all of a sudden it reboots. Same has happened running MS word. Also
froze when arranging Icons on desktop!! I've had a three day headache putting
this thing together. What have I obviously overlooked? Any known problems or
ideas appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

Too Hot!

Sounds like a over heating problem to me.  I am running the same mobo and
the temp on it is 25C.  I hope you mean the cpu temp but that would be way
to hot also.  What type of heat sink and fan combonation is on the cpu.
When I built this system, I put a mini copper orb on it and the temp was
high but not as high as yours.  I put a SK-6 with a YS-Tech fan and it
dropped 10 degrees.  But if your mobo is 130C you have big time problems
somewhere.

Does sound like an overheating video card, but if you have all those
extra fans, that shouldn't happen. 130deg C??? That MUST be a typo,
you couldn't have a system running that hot.

Try underclocking your video card and see if you still get the
graphics lockup in N4. If it stops, then you will need better cooling
to run it properly.

What temp is your house/ambient at? If you're living in Mexico or
something, you may find it difficult to cool properly ;)

I know it may sound weird but make sure that you heatsink is properly
attached to your processor. I've had a problem when it uncllipped it self
and so wasn't actually touching the chip, thereby doing absoulutely sod
all....took me days to work that one out.

Andy your lucky it didn't fry the chip completely.  I have a toasted
1.1gzh AMd chip that is worthless because I re-installed the heatsink
backwards.

This sounds kind of stupid, I know, but it's easy to do- did you take the
little piece of plastic film off of the CPU before you put the heatsink on?
I had a friend who's CPU temp would shoot to 90+ celsius within 30 seconds-
I pulles the heatsink off, and there was the plastic- took it off, and it
never gets above 40 now. Just something to check.

Thanks for the suggestions all. My original post did have a typo...the correct
running temps are MB 35c 95f....CPU 53c 125.5 F.
I'm going to go back in and check the heat sink and fan setup. Man o man....

You didn't mention the p/s size. What size ( wattage) is the p/s? AMD
requires a 300 W p/s/ Could be the reason for the spontaneous reboots.
I would agree with the other posts though. Your m/b should not be
hotter than 150 degrees F, max! Get a larger fan/heatsink combo or
take the case cover off and see if the problem continiues.

PS is indeed 300w. Went back and made sure the tape was removed and heat sink
is touching chip. Case is off and ambient temp of room is around 72f. Still
running about 95f on MB and 125.5 on cpu. Are there any known Thrustmaster Pro
digital or Win 2000 problems that I am overlooking? Thanks for the suggestions
and keep em coming. Going into racing DT'S here.

there is one update for dx8 that is specifically for Thrustmaster pro
digital pedals.  Made a big difference for me.  I would get my soft pedals
sometimes and then next session they would be very abrubt.  The update,
found in windows update, brought a much more consistant pedal operation.
Dunno if this will help your situation tho.

Biz

Is p/s certified for use with AMD, they have very strict voltage tolerance
requirements that if not met will also cause all kinds of problems, and make
sure you are also using the thermal heatsink adhesive, its almost mandatory
for a good thermal transfer away from the cpu...

Thanks all,
I will try the dx8 TM tweak Dave and see if it helps. I need to check with
supplier Biz to see if PS is certified for AMD. Not sure on this one at all.
I'll check tomorrow and post.
THANKS ALL !!!

Dan, I don't know what to tell you about where the problem lies but I do
have an Abit KT7A-RAID mobo with a 1.2ghz. Athlon and I am using a GlobalWin
FOP-32 to cool it. My cpu temps. are a steady 50 C. (I had to disable acpi
so I don't get the low idle temps. but I also don't go any higher under full
load either) and I have yet to have a system lockup or reboot
spontaneously... so, I don't think your cpu temps. are a problem if your
running 53 C. under load. Try resetting your cmos and going with the
failsafe settings in the bios. This will usually set your ram timings (and
other parameters) to the most conservative settings. If this cures your
problems then try going to more aggressive settings in the bios (ie: ram and
cpu settings) until the problems return... that may be one way to hunt this
one down.
Good Luck,
Robin

A good call there Robin, and I think his CPU temp is not the cause - a
little high maybe, but not the cause IMO. I still think it's a video
card lockup, hence the sound still functioning. Check the HSF on the
video card, and also try UNDERclocking it. Otherwise it may be a an
AGP current issue or similar.
