If you haven't already done so, check out www.amdmb.com, a site
dedicated to AMD-based systems.  The forums there are quite
informative.  Maybe someone there has solved this already.

One quick thing to try is replacing the video card with something else
and see if the problems go away.

Good luck,
Gerald Moore

So we shouldn't feel bad that my son's friend can only get his down to
59C?
FWIW we use a nifty heatsink fan combo AND a GIANT HUGE 20in Box fan to
lower that 59c down to 52c.  (case cover off of course...)  :)

Whoa Eldred, you really should do something about that pretty quick.

is low to mid 20s. You could get away with it in the 50s, but NOT at
79C!?!?!?!

Upgraded cooling is definitely in order.

Actually, I sort of got it backward- the piece of plastic film I was talking
about is on the heatsink, not the CPU- on the HS I mentioned, there was a
square of thermal compound covered by the plastic- with the plastic in
place, the temps skyrocketed, of course.
Sorry if I caused you any panic... :D

Well, if I was Eldred I'd panicking at 79deg, but then again it may
just be a wrong temp reading or a (really) hot day or something. Maybe
he didn't take the plastic seal off of the thermal pad?

I dunno.  By all accounts, my system is running too hot.  I'm guessing that I
need to do something to fix it, but I *hate* dealing with the CPU.  It's such a
pain to remove and re-install...

I have an Antec case with 3 fans in it besides the power supply.  My system
temp is about 35.  A student here at work suggested something called Arctic
Silver.  I haven't ordered any yet...

Even the best heat paste won't give you all that much Eldred, couple of
degrees at most perhaps, basic thing, your system is way too hot at 79C,
even if you run an ASUS MoBo which normally reports higher temps than
most other boards 79C is way too hot, at least 10-15 degrees on an ASUS
board, 25++ degrees on most other boards

(Rafe and I've had this talk before...:-)

Something's not right, and this thing is stable ?

Are you sure that the HS is clamping down properly ?

What kind of FAN/HS have you got, the 1 Ghz plus AMD's need a fair bit
of cooling and the smaller HS's with a small quiet fan just won't do,
you need something similar to this one

http://www.globalwin.com.tw/cd_html.html

The WBK68 is the smallest thing recommended for a 1.3 AMD, even the
FOP68, which in itself is a pretty good product is not recommended past
1.2 for AMD use, and I'm sure you'll find most other manufacturers has
something similar on their website

Beers and cheers

Yes, I did take the plastic off the thermal pad.  The thing just runs hot.
It's possible that the pad on the heatsink just isn't enough.  I'll look into
that 'Artic Silver' I mentioned.  The guy who suggested it said it dropped his
CPU temp from 60 to 25, or something like that...

Eldred,
To get that kind of temp. drop he must have had the H/S Fan on wrong and
then after applying the A/S thermal paste put the H/S Fan on correctly.
There is no way Arctic Silver drops temps. by 35 degrees C. My 1.2 GHz.
Athlon runs at a steady 52 C. without acpi enabled on my KT7A-RAID mobo. but
it doesn't go any higher under full load either. I have a GlobalWin FOP-32
H/S Fan and use plain old Radio Shack white thermal paste. Your temps. do
sound extremely high... good luck.

Agreed. I recently got some arctic silver, it dropped my temps by 2
deg, but 35deg can only be by correcting a poorly attached heatsink.
Pretty common on AMD chips, since they're such a small die. Often get
lifted up slightly on the raised bit of the socket.
