ICR2: 1996 drivers2.txt data (revised)

by Michael E. Carv » Fri, 12 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Okay, I have taken a closer look at the "Drag" figures and have revised
the data to better reflect qualifying.  Once again, keep in mind that
this data is soley based on the drivers' performance in the first 3
races of 1996.  If your favorite driver looks like I "shorted" him, it
is only because they haven't performed up to previous levels.  Or has
not yet had the "racer's luck" they deserve.  Also, due to the way the
game selects the random numbers for a race, real "simulated" results may
not look anything like what you see when you just read the numbers.  Plug
them in and give them a try.  I will try to update the Qualifying
numbers this weekend after the results for Long Beach are known.

Hi Michael...let me say first that I really do appreciate the work you put
into your DRIVERS.TXT files; I hope everybody else does.  Now let me say
that I like this set of numbers much better than the first... :)

I might have to plug 'em into my ICR2 now..

Thanks.  According to Papyrus so much of the driving AI is hardcoded,
but I think I am coming up with a good means of getting some real
(albeit "simulated") reflection of the current crop of IndyCar drivers.
Just for the heck of it I am including the Long Beach starting grid
produced by my numbers.  The data was based soley on the first 3 races.
It may not reflect the way they start this weekend, but it is pretty
close and some of them are right on the mark.  (NOTE:  Michael fare
better in the simulated version since he wasn't "blocked" all the time
on the track.  Wasn't it Littlest Al that said he liked going to Whine
Country, when he visited the Andrettis?)

Michael:
I'm using your latest drivers2.txt.  It's pretty good, but I have one major
gripe: THE BACKMARKERS ARE WAY TOO DAMN FAST!!!  Their power/traction numbers
need to be lowered by at least 100.  Re: your posting:  1.8 seconds difference
for the whole field?  Should be around 3.5-4 secs.

[ps- this isn't a flame... your drivers2.txt is still the best I've seen
posted]

Actually, at Long Beach the first 22 cars were within 1.2 seconds of each
other in qualifying.  The backmarkers started with Jeff Krosnoff:

28.  Dennis Vitolo         Reynard 95-Ford-G      0:55.850  0.042   +6.98

I found Michael's revised drivers2.txt file pretty darn accurate up to,
say, the last three spots, where at Long Beach you had Gurney's
doggedly slow development Eagle, and then two *very* green rookies
(last minute additions), one driving a '95 car.  The entire field was way
faster this year than last year, and the emergence of the
Reynard-Honda-Firestone combination seems to have pushed the frontrunners
a little further in front than everyone else.  I think the only change
that needs to be made in the (revised) drivers2.txt file is maybe
punishing the Cosworths a little more, and the Eagle/Toyotas a *lot*
more.  And conversely, rewarding the Hondas.

The main problem I get with the drivers2.txt is getting drivers to
maintain consistency - one race I ran had King Hiro winning Long Beach,
which is about as likely as my grandmother winning, while Vasser's
(and Ganassi's) consistent *** is hard to accurately reflect.

BTW, hello, I'm a lurker.  On this group, anyway.
