Ed - just went there and the Viper 770 is $136.90. Is it shown
somewhere else on the site at $103? Even at $126.90 (w/ rebate) it
would be a good compliment to my 2 V2s...

Buy.com may have the worst reputation of any large 'net retailer.
Complaints abound in the DVD and computer hardware newsgroups.  They
seem to make a practice of promoting specials on items they have low
stock on, resulting in massive backorders.  They also seem to
routinely charge credit cards prior to actual shipment.

I personally had some perfectly fine experiences with this company in
1998, prompting me to continue using them.  But of the last 4 orders I
placed with them, three were screwed up. In three completely different
ways. I sense a company in disarrary, and personally recommend
shopping elsewhere.

TNT2 for $93 !!

by 'John' Joao Sil » Fri, 11 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I just had a screwed up order with Buy.com this week! Here follows my
sad tale for anyone that is considering ordering from buy.com.. beware
it's sort of long.

Saw the post here on r.a.s. talking about buy.com having a low price on the
Logitech Wingman Formula Force Force Feedback wheel and so I went and looked,
sure enough they listed the wheel for $103, wow! amazingly low price and
their Web page shows that they have them in stock, what a coincidence since
I just broke the bungie cord again on my four year old Thrustmaster T2, I
figure what the hell instead of fixing the T2 once again, I'll take the
plunge into FF in preparation for GPL1.1. So I order the Logitech FF wheel,
and as long as I'm ordering I also order a new mouse and some CD-RW media.
Note this was on Monday.

Tuesday I check for my order status, it says "in-process", so I call them
up and find out that they shipped out my mouse and CD-RW media, but the
wheel hasn't shipped yet. I ask them what the problem is, the customer
support guy says that one particular warehouse seems to be out, but he
sees that another warehouse has 8 Logitech FF wheels in-stock, he is
having them ship out a wheel for me right away. Ok, I check their webpage
again, it still shows the Logitech FF wheel in stock.

Wednesday I check again, now the website order status shows tracking info
for the mouse and CD-RW media, but still nothing on the wheel. I call them
again, this time the customer support person says that the wheel is now on
backorder and that is why it hasn't shipped. I explain to him what the guy
told me the day before about having 8 of them and also that their website
still shows them in stock, he says the guy must be mistaken because the wheel
has been on back order for a few days, and that their website stock status
often lags behind for a few days. He says they don't expect any new shipment
of wheels until the end of June. I say, ok I guess I'll wait since the
price is so low.

As the day goes by I keep thinking that so far buy.com has been terrible
compared to all the other good experiences with online shopping I've had
over the last 3 years, and I've done a lot of buying online, including all
the parts for my last two PC's I put together myself, and tons of DVD's which
I've ordered from multiple online shopping companies.

By the end of the day, I decided I didn't want to reward buy.com for their
bait and switch tactics they pull with they web "in stock" status. I checked
their web page and they *still* showed the wheel in stock, how many other
people like me were seeing that and putting in an order for the wheel at
the same time that I looked at it??

So I called up and cancelled my order for the Logitech wheel, and I will
not be doing any online shopping with them in the future. They lost this
sale of the wheel, plus any future business from someone who orders at
least 2-3 new DVD's a month from online stores, they really have to do
much better if they want to become what they call themselves -
"The Internet Superstore"

I ended up finding the wheel in stock at compusanet.com $119, I ordered it
last night and it shipped out already, eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Partly my fault for not listening to the warnings about buy.com, but
I thought I was safe as long as something was in stock, as I found out
their Web page lies about their stock status and even their phone support
mis-represents the status of their stock, I'm not telling anyone not
to shop there, since their prices really are very low, but if you do,
be ready for a few headaches.

Seeyas on the track.

Don't be too surprised if your canceled order shows up at your door

Yup.
Their support personnel will tell you an order has been cancelled.
They will insist on it.  They'll tell you an order was not
"authorized".  You can even give them over 24 hours cancellation
notice before a product ships.  But be ready to refuse the shipments.

Hi, Don't worry doesn't come across as a rant :-)

Whenever I order online I only order from retailers that have what I need
in stock for the exact reason that I do not like to wait weeks for something
to come into stock before even shipping to me.

Buy.com's website said that the Logitech wheel was in stock, and still
continues to say it is in stock *right now* despite the fact that it has
actually been on backorder since Monday (4 days):
http://www.buy.com/comp/product.asp?SKU=10011186

I waited 3 days for them to ship something they said was in stock and they
would ship within 24hrs. So I gave them an extra 2 days leeway for the time
they said it would ship. If they had told me from the start that it was out
of stock, yes I would have gone to a different vendor that had it ready to
ship, but I might have been a future customer of buy.com some other time in the
future when they had a good price on something in stock. By mis-representing
their stock status, I can no longer trust what their Web page or their
telephone sale support representatives say, so I will not be buying from
them in the future.

I agree with you that buy.com has low prices, and many times it is worth
waiting a few weeks to get something for that low price, but I do not
like them saying that they have this wheel in stock and take Web orders
for this wheel when in reality it is on back-order and they are not
expecting a new shipment for 3 weeks, not without informing the customer
of this fact.

The online shopping world is extremely competetive right now and the online
consumer has a huge number of retailers to choose from and does not have
to put up with retailers that give customers headaches. I've had great online
shopping experiences with other online retailers and will continue to shop
online with the retailers that treat me right.

I'm not telling anyone not to shop there, they might be terrific for
99% of the orders, I'm just passing on my experience as a warning to
anyone like me who wants to order stuff that's in stock so that they
know what could *possibly* happen to them.

Seeyas on the track.

Yeh i had a bad experience on Buy.com.... If your smart, youll stay away
from anything on that
site.. they intentionally post 1-5 objects to get you there and then say
they are outa stock on it.. they get to use your credit money for 5 days
before credited your account. Imagince thousands of 5 day usages per day and
you can see they make their money on the interest of those five days...They
need to shut this site down!! Its a rip off...

Nonsense! If you look at the product status it tells you what is "in stock",
"1-2 week wait" or "special order" So where are they making money off
your buck? Where are the 1-5 objects only to get you on there site?
[A] I never order online & [B] never order anything out of stock or I'll
certainly won't make a "special order".. Use some common sense! I've
got every item I have ordered within 2 days! But I follow my own [A]
& [B] rules also!! Think about it!
Cheers Thom_j.

Since you never made online order, your assertion is invalid. See below.

Unfortunately, most online merchants's web site do not and can not precisely
reflect the actual stocking status. This is especially true for Buy.com.
You'll find most items listed there as in stock are actually out-of-stock. A
phone call to verify it is always necessary. What I don't like is buy.com
always charge your credit card first as soon as they received your order no
matter it's in-stock or not. Most reputable online mechants only charge you
when the items are in-stock and ready to ship or shipped.

>Nonsense! If you look at the product status it tells you what is "in stock",
>"1-2 week wait" or "special order"

Except that they lie.

They charge your credit card as soon as your order is processed.  Even
if it takes weeks to actually ship your order.

Then why are you in this thread?

Not on purpose.  Neither do I.  What's your recourse if the vendor
misrepresents their stock status in order to get your money?  Well,
better to be warned away from such vendors; that's what we're talking
about here.

Most of the major online vendors are reputable, honest, and try very
hard to succeed by satisfying their customers. I've had nothing but
good experiences with such outlets as Egghead.com, Reel.com, necx.com,
800.com, bn.com, and several others.  Buy.com doesn't meet the
standards set by these class acts, and Usenet newsgroups are exactly
the right place to post warnings about them.

Why? I can order via phone & I have asked many times is the status
vaild on the net & they said yes {I have no reason not to believe them!}

Merchants online or off can not precisely reflect the actual stocking
status.
Not one! This is why it is better to call! Well {for me} it is only common
sense to pick up the phone and call the 880#{is an 800#}cost nothing! I
just got 2 Voodoo2 cards & it still isnt on my Visa account. I can check
my account daily!
What is so hard about making a phone call? I don't understand. You get
your own name & password then verify everything with a few questions.
Your done within 5-10minutes! Again; I say Nonsense & try calling the
880 number!!
Cheers  Thom_j.

with buycom... Not once! Am I the only one? I don't think so!!
In Regards To: Why am I on this thread?? I have a right to make my
subjective opinions/comments as your subjective opinions/comments
Probably all the online outlets are just a good but buycom is fine too!
