Just curious as toy what people feel the best 5.1/6.1 *** soundcard is
these days.
I don't really like the Audigy due to the numerous problems and conflicts it
has and was looking at Phillips, Santa Cruz, Hercules.
Something with good support under XP that has EAX, etc.  Basically an
Audigy/SBLive replacement.

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Most reliable card I've ever used.  Solid Win2K/XP Drivers.  All the
features you could ever want.

And it's less than $80.

Does it support EAX and 5.1 speakers in games?

To be honest, I don't know anyone who still runs 9x, so I've never
considered the 9x drivers.

Though this is the first complaint I recall ever hearing about them.

I'm pretty sure it supports EAX (check the web site).  As far as TRUE 5.1 in
games, I thought the Phillips was the only card that really ever did that in
TRUE fashion.

However, it does have Virtual 5.1 in games that works well.  There aren't
many games that support 5.1.

Of course, in AC3 mode (Dolby or DTS) it supports true 5.1 digital.

I have a 5.1 speaker set (Klipsch ProMedia 5.1) so I use it like this all
the time.  It sounds great.

What exactly is true 5.1? As opposed to EAX?

Does any card output an AC3 stream, so i can connect it straight to my AV
amp?  I know most do when playing a dvd/ac3 files, but what about games?

My 5.1 amp only  has analogue fot 2 channels.

Rick, there are almost no games that actually have DD(AC-3) sound, but for games that do, most any
5.1 sound card also has an digital out that should pass the signal to your DD/DTS amp.

Nope, but I'm pretty certain a few titles do exist.  I don't like to use statement like none, never,
every, and always.  Just because I don't know of any, doesn't mean  they don't exist.  Last time I
checked, I don't buy EVERY game that comes out.  Crap, there I go again..<G>

You neglect to mention that there is no point in dual booting to XP and 98,
XP is perfectly fine for 99% of gamers.  ;0)

Dolby Digital 5.1.  DTS Digital 5.1.

4 discreet channels of information, plus the .1 sub effects.

I have no idea what EAX really is.  I think it just makes noise out of all
speakers :)
