GPL: 3DFX to Rendition

by Christian Gingra » Mon, 09 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hello all.

I'm using GPL on my "lowly" P200 MMX, with a Voodoo1 card. It's going OK for
now and will change my PC in about 6 months. Until then, I decided to buy a
PCI Thriller Rendition 8 Mb card to get better frame rates with more details
on.

Do I have to reinstall the game in order to use the Rendition card instead
of the Voodoo card? I have a lot of patches installed for GPL and I would
like to avoid a complete reinstallation.

Is it possible to just take the gpl.exe (Rendition version) and replace the
3DFX one?

Thanks for all the info you can give me on that.

To change the graphics driver goto OPTIONS / GRAPHICS and change the
3Dfx entry to Rendition.  Restart GPL and viola!  If you are not going
to keep the V1 in the machine I would recommend changing GPL to software
mode before installing the Rendition card.

Jason.

Thanks Jason.

Since the game installer asks early in the process about the type of 3D
acceleration we have, I tought the installed version was different depending
on the answer. Your answer confirms to me that the question is just there so
the game is automatically configured the right way from the start.

Wonderful then!

GPL: 3DFX to Rendition

Mr. Gingras,

Speaking of "lowly," I've been running GPL on a 133mhz P1 with a Sierra
Rendition card.  I recently bought a Voodoo 3 (16MB) card and was rewarded with
an immediate increase in framerate.  (I bought the Voodoo3 in anticipation of a
450mhz P2 upgrade next month -- I can't wait.)

Papyrus, at least some in Papyrus, seem to like the Rendition graphics over
3dfx.  Being the insensitive lout that I am, I can't see a hell of a lot of
difference in the graphics.  I CAN see a great difference in the speed.  And of
course Papyrus and Ma Glockners Screen Door and Software Development Company are
the only two who're supporting Rendition these days.
