...unless Eldred wimps out. :)

If you thought Bristol was bad, this is gonna be something to remember.

The setup is very pushy.  The lift/brake points occur well before you
get to the corners.

Shift down to 3rd, or stay in 4th?  Shifting to 3rd allows you to brake
a little later, but the trade-off is that you have less of a chance to
recover if you wait too long.  If you lift/brake sooner and stay in 4th,
you can downshift to 3rd to help add some braking to avoid overdriving
the turn in an emergency situation.

If you go into a turn side-by-side underneath another car, I recommend
you shift to 3rd to maintain more lateral control of the car, and re-
apply the gas slowly and smoothly as you exit the turn.  The physics is
such that you can feel the rear end set, indicating that it's okay to
stab the gas.

My fastest time so far is 21.013 in traffic.  Since I'm usually mid-pack
as far as speed is concerned, you can expect the really fast guys to be
close to 19-second lap times. The slowest guys will probably be in the
24's or so.

I ran a couple of offline races against the AI, and it's REAL easy to
lose a lap in the pits, especially if you try to have damage fixed.

Front tires get chewed up quickly here.  I was able to do about 60 laps
in traffic before needing to stop for tires.  The reason for the extreme
tire-wear is that you almost need to stand on the brakes to slow for the
turns.  Add this to the pushy aspect of the setup, and you're gonna
scrub the *** off your tires pretty quick.

Use your head, smooth on and smooth off, and don't get too aggressive
before lap 175 - it's a 200-lap race and we all have plenty of time to
settle in.

Of course, the fast guys will probably lap the rest of us by lap 50...

Lastly - practice, practice, practice.

I actually found it rather therapeutic... And, gasp, I turned on the racing
line for testing. So far I haven't gotten under 22 seconds testing but it's
coming. I ran one quick race offline with the crash crazy AI, kinda crazy
fun but not too good for lap times! :-)

Just out of curiousity, how many people are showing up at these races
nowadays? I got involved in a couple of races earlier this spring, and
had a pretty good time. I see I'm still on the roster (#2), and now that
the OT at work has subsided, I was thinking I might try and make a race
or two before the season ends. (I ain't gonna start with Martinsville
though!!!)

Any chance I can still get some track time?

Thanks,

Gary

If you're in the roster, and if your sierra ID (as shown in the roster) is
correct, then you're probably in the invite list.  As long as you're in
the invite list, you can race.  :)

Thanks John! I'll try and join the Martinsville practice just to make
sure everything works. Two more questions: what day/time does the server
come on, and what's the server ID? I haven't raced RASCAR since April if
I'm not mistaken. It's been awhile, that's for sure :-)

RASCAR: Martinsville next week...

by Larr » Sun, 20 Oct 2002 04:34:18

This is, indeed, going to be interesting :)

I have another recommendation.

Cars that are up high, in the second lane, for your own sake be up 1.5 lanes
instead.  It won't affect your times, and there will be a lot less wrecks.

I've been driving 100 laps a night with ONE goal in mind.  Corner entry
without drifting up.

But, folks, even when you do it RIGHT, the front end simply has a tendancy
to wander up just a bit, sometimes after you thing it's settled in nicely.

So the best recommendation I have is if you are up high, keep this in mind
and give a little extra room.  Even when the guys below are trying to do it
right, it can turn out wrong very quickly.

I sure could stand for a couple hundred pounds less weight in the right-rear
spring.  The ass-end is snap happy in this setup coming off!

John - If you re pulling 21.00x lap times, you are going to be nearer to the
top cars than you think.

There's no way we'll see 19's with this setup.

I think us average guys will be running mid-21's at best.

I don't think our season ends.

We race year-round, right ?

Well, I was gonna mention that.  After we're done mimicking the nascar
season, I think we should run a couple of 100% races in arcade mode with
no damage and no cautions.  And we should make it at an interesting
tracks, like Bristol, Richmond, or Martinsville.

Another idea would be to have a 2-hour warmup session and see who can
complete the most laps in that two hours.  This would have the added
benefit of allowing us to go as fast as we want (or dare to) on pit
road.

Or maybe even run silverstone.  Something that isn't the regular way we
do it, and something that doesn't generate ratings or LPI values.

I'm all for longer races, but longer races without yellows just don't work
out well...

If you hang around for a long race, you deserve to be able to compete for
the win.  Without yellows, especially at short tracks, many will quit
because there is no hope.

I was thinking more along the lines of fun races where lpi and ratings
don't matter.

John, I kinda like the new layout you made for the RASCAR results.
Maybe it would be nice if u ranked the startup and warmup times like u did
with the qualifying times.

And how come you don't mention Daytona-Night 07/06 ? I'm quite fond of that
one :-)

cheers, jurjen
