Group,

I know this to be a very subjective request, but what is the (subjective
best) F1 simulator out today?  I have a PIII 600eb, 256MB and a geforce256
card.  I love GPL but am looking for a current F1 sim with awesome physics
and fantastic graphics.  I prefer simulation driving over arcade driving and
love the ability to 'tweak' a car to suit my driving style.

If this request has been posted before, I missed it and apologize for the
double post.

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

I have GP3, Ubisoft's F1 Racing Championship (F1RC), and EA's F1
Championship Season 2000 (F1CS2K), and I would wholeheartedly
recommend F1CS2K as the closest thing to GPL in terms of modern F1
sims.  I have a Duron 750 with a GeForce256 card, and F1CS2K runs
fine, so you should have no problems.

Check out the demo and see for yourself:

http://www.3dfiles.com/games/f1championshipseason2000.shtml

There is a TON of third-party support for F1CS2K, including a CART
conversion and a Trans Am conversion, and also an advanced physics
patch that I put together that really makes the physics come alive
(you can find that at the Blackhole Motorsports site, and I believe it
works fine with the demo).

The High Gear forum has a VERY active F1CS2K community, and there are
lots of helpful people there:

http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~hg/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=23

There is also an F1CS2K Rank site, much like the GPLRank:

http://f1cs2krank.dhs.org/

And also an active offline competition as well:

http://hem.spray.se/redeby/f1/offline.htm

Of the three current modern F1 sims, F1CS2K wins hands-down as far as
I'm concerned.

Enjoy!

Well, there is no debate on that matter. GP3 is still king IMHO.

There are modern F1 sims with fantastic graphics, but not of the first thing
you want ;-)

Come on, Frank -- your biggest gripe with F12000 and F1CS2K was the
graphics, not the physics.  Physics-wise, F12000 and F1CS2K are the
best of the current bunch.  Watch for F1 2001 to raise the bar on all
counts.

Well, he wrote "and", not "or"    ;-)

Hmmm . . . good point.  Poor reading comprehension skills on my part,
I guess.  Sorry!

;-)

As I said, though, watch for F1 2001 to raise the bar on all counts.

Jeremy,
This question has been asked and debated many times here.  I think what
you'll find is that several people (if they can be bothered) will wade in
with reasons why most of the best of the current bunch is their favourite
and that it is clearly better than the rest.  The fact is that is no racing
simulator to date - with the ras caveat about GPL, of course - is perfect
and it is largely down to subjective opinion.
There is a general (?) agreement that F1CS, F1RC and GP3 are the ones worthy
of your attention.  Each of them has good and bad points, so it's a question
of trying them for yourself as you won't get a definitive answer here.
Good luck!
Iain

Hi Jeremy,

as others have said there are three very close contenders, but if you
have a force feedback wheel and want to take advantage of it, GP3 is the
only one to have.

If he had a CPU > 800 MHz and a Voodoo 4 or 5, I'd say F1CS2000 considering
the latest improvements in both departments.

Right now, the best of F1200CS, GP3, and F1RC is definitely F1RC. The best
graphics in any sim, and a superb physics model. A patch is to be released
soon (ignore the *** theorists here at r.a.s.).

GP3 has a lot going for it, but the graphics are dated, and the driving
model seems too forgiving compared to F12000 and F1RC.

I was one of the first here at r.a.s. to say F12000 was excellent. It does
many things well, but after F1RC, it doesn't hold up anymore. F12001 by EA
may be something special. In the meantime, F1RC is the way to go.

You can even read the lettering on the tires when moving at 320 km/h. ;)  (I
may look like a teaser but it's true)

Anyway, Jeremy, it's really a matter of taste. Why don't you download the
demos and see what you like. But I have to tell you, the F1RC-demo DOES HIDE
its no-aids behaviour. Guess why ?
