I use a Canopus Pure 3D II video card with the latest driver (not beta). My
system is 400 mz, 128 RAM, Spectra 2500 video card, Windows 98. I tried to
change the resolution in the game from 640x400 to 800x600 and the top and
bottom of my screen shrunk. Now I have black areas. I tried to resize the
screen by adjusting the controls on my monitor. Still have black areas. I
reinstalled the Pure 3D II driver. Still black areas. I reset the resolution to
640x400. No help. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

It's supposed to be like that. It's called  'letter box' view and it allows
a more relistic view in the***pit in my opinion. So don't worry there is
nothing wrong with your system. In the other views the black areas are used
to display important information.
