        I just picked up GPL for $9.95, couldn't pass it up, have heard great
things about it, etc.  My system is:

AMD K6-2 300MHz
DFI P5BV3+ motherboard with latest BIOS and latest VIA drivers
64MB PC100 RAM
Win98 + all critical updates + DX6.1 + DXMedia6.1
Voodoo3 2000 AGP (driver version 1.02.18)
SBLive Value (Live!Ware 3.0 drivers)
Maxtor 3.5GB PIO Mode 4 drive
WD 8GB UDMA/33 drive
ZipCD650 Rewriter
Acer 40x CDROM

Now I installed this puppy and expected it to "just work" (I select
"3dfx renderer" during the install).  Every time I start GPL, I get the
3dfx "logo", then I get a black screen.  ESC-RETURN-RETURN doesn't get
me back to windows, CTRL-ALT-DEL pressed repeatedly does nothing.  The
computer is wedged... I have to power cycle to get it back again.

So, I downloaded the GPL 1.2 patch... same problem.

I see a lot of messages about people running GPL with the various
Voodoo3 cards.... how did you do it?  What V3 driver are you using?
What version of DirectX?

Need For Speed III and Re-Volt both work great on my system!

Systems Programmer III, Network and Systems Services

The first thing you might try is going into your 3DFX options and disable
the splash screen. This seems to have cured the black screen problem for
some people.

You also might want to update to Dx7a,

and to the latest V3 drivers, 1.04.00,

Stick with it, you have a good system for GPL, it just sounds like a simple
driver problem.
