GPL with Voodoo2 SLI not running: Black screen

by A.D. Egge » Sun, 14 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Just bought a PII-450 with 128Mb RAM and STB4400 and 2 Voodoo2 cards in
SLI mode. Never used GPL before, I just had the box ready for whenever I
bought a new PC. Now it's here, but I can't get it running. I can't get
GPL to run with the Voodoo2 cards.

Here's what happening. In the monitor settings for 3Dfx tab I can change
the resolution to 1024x768 or to anything else for that matter. There
are 3 settings. One for Glide, one for Direct3D and one for both.
Whatever setting I put in there, every time I go to the Display
properties agian it is back to 640x480. Why is that happening?????

Then the GPL part. So I change the resolution on the 3Dfx tab to
1024x768. I start GPL and all I get is a black screen. When I disable
the 2 Voodoo cards I can run GPL, but it only has 640x480 resolution.
What's going on?

Does anybody have a clue how to get out of this mess? I already
downloaded the newest drivers Glide 2.54, but that didn't work either.

Thanks,
Arthur

Hi Arthur,

I guess a major Waaaaah is appropriate here.

Here is that Waaaaah part.

I believe you can set the refresh rate for you monitor here. It is not
a selection method for which resolution should be used in an
application. (read: game) Check the refresh rate for 1024x768, it
should not be too high for your monitor. You better start with 60Hz.

See above, other then the refresh rate, it should not matter.

The software mode only supports the 640x480 mode. It is ugly too.

The first thing you should do is to check your refresh rate. Start
with 60 Hz. See if that works. (This via that 3dFX tab thingy)

The next best thing you can do is to download the 3dfx reference
drivers, version 2.53.  The 2.54 has a major bug, I believe. (It is
also possible to copy the 2.53 Glide DLL's in the GPL directory, but I
guess you better install the 2.53 drivers the appropriate way)

You can download them at:

http://www.3dfx.com/

I hope this all makes a little sense, good luck!

They are only for selecting the refresh rate for the video mode you
selected - eg 85 Hz in 640x480 Glide, 75Hz in 640x480 Direct 3D and so
on... They do NOT change the resolution in games! So it doesn't matter
that they're back at 640x480 when you go there again...

Do the 3Dfx cards work correct in other 3D games? If "yes", then try
my advice below. If not, get the latest reference drivers from
www.3dfx.com and reinstall DirectX 6 (if that's the version you're
using).

Put Glide 2.53 in your GPL directory, 2.54 seems to make problems. If
you can't find it, mail me.

Thank for your help guys. Don't start laughing now as I tell you the main
reason it didn't work. You know when they ship you a new PC they send a whole
lot of stuff with it, including cables etc. I had one very small cable that I
didn't use and didn't know wht to use it for. First I thought I had to use it
to connect the 2 Voodoo cards, but that didn't work either. Then finally I
saw the light (I guess I was focused too much on playing GPL). I had to
connect the monitor to one of the Voodoo cards and use the cable to connect
the regular graphics board to the Voodoo cards.

And yes, it was finally working, although it immediately froze up on the
selection screens. Then I sorted out your drivers advices again and installed
the 2.53 version in the GPL directory. Voila, it worked!! Superb, no problems
at all. Can run it with all features on, really smooth graphics. Thanks for
the advice!!!

Arthur
