GPL & Voodoo2 SLI problems

by Mark » Fri, 10 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hi all,

I'm having lock-up problems with GPL and the lastest voodoo2 drivers for
dx7; The game runs fine for about 1-2 minutes, but then the screen
freezes, but it sounds like the game continues to run. I also seem to
have this problem with other games. Is it that the new V2 drivers and
dx7 just don't get along? I never had this with dx6.1, etc. I hope the
only option isn't a re-format of my harddrive to rid myself of dx7.
Thanks in advance.

I don't use v2's but i believe the cure is to get dx 7a  ....
of course the old cure was to use 2.53 drivers in the GPL directory
good luck

Thanks for your help, but I still get these lock-ups on GPL and most of my
games that can use the glide drivers. I upgraded to dx7a, and the same screen
freezing happens about 2-3 minutes into racing. Let me ask you this:according
to the device mgr., one voodoo has the updated (I believe it's the 1-27-2000
dated driver for dx7), while the other has an older version. Should I update
the second? From what I remember, it won't let me... All of my voodoo games
seem to have problems with locking after I installed dx7. HELP.

I run Voodoo2's in SLI mode with (these days)no problems. There was the
occasional lock-up until I upgraded GPL to v1.2 (I assume you are running
the latest version of GPL)Before that, I adjusted the hardware acceleration
tab: it's in ControlPanel> System> Performance> Graphics.
By moving the slider 1 or 2 notches left you can alleviate some problems .
Might be worth trying if you haven't done already. Also, have you looked at
the Voodoo Properties app in Display properties? 'm no expert on what some
of the options under the "advanced " tab do, but I leave 'em all unchecked,
and everything works OK. If it comes to it, try disabling SLI mode and see
if the problem still occurs. You should not need to update the drivers of
the second card.

As far as the device manager questions goes, 3DFX says you don't have
to update both but I always do, certainly can't hurt.
The one fix that worked for me when I had the freezing problem in GPL
was to reduce the number of sounds played.
