Neat. :)

But I'm a bit puzzled: the banked section begins at "Rettifilo
Tribune" near the second tower, where the red (Firestone?) ads prevent
you from entering it. Now, as far as I understood, Monza used to be an
oval track, with the "Parabolica" being one turn and the banking being
the other. This would mean that the banked part should return to the
"normal" track near the "Variante Ascari"... but the banking we see
crosses the track between "Serraglio" and "Ascari"... Does this mean
that the oval was much wider than the distance between beginning and
end of the Parabolica? Is the start/finish straight the only section
that's shared between the old and the new track? If so, it seems
pretty unlikely that Papy will ever "open" that other track for us,
since it would mean modelling 3/4ths of an entire track. Apparently,
everything we see of the banking is just "trackside objects" right
now, not "real" track.

Jeez I hope so, the poor sod's driving round the banking the wrong
way!

Essentially yes. If you look at the current track you can see the
original track covered over by gravel at the Variante Goodyear. Just
prior to that the track spears right to join the oval. The oval then
crosses the track past Lesmo2 at a turn called Serraglio (the bridge
over your head), and goes round the back of the Parabolica to rejoin
at the start of the pit straight (you can see this if you go backwards
in GPL.

And yes, the banking is just objects. No point wasting memory on
something we can't drive on - unfortunately :-(

Cheers!

When will you appreciate the fact that THE BANKING DOES NOT EXIST IN THE
SIM??!!

Why, oh why would Papyrus bother to spend time, money and space on
programming something that is NOT part of the simulation?

Get real!

Oh Bruce, Bruce, Bruce... I knew I should have included a disclaimer
like "of course, the banking wasn't used for GP races after 1961, so
*not* having it in the sim is absolutely accurate" for your benefit.
 :)

I don't think Papy should invest money and especially time in creating
the banked section. As I said, I believe the banking is just a simple
3D trackside object right now, so it would mean a lot of work to turn
it into "real" track. That so many people feel the whole oval is
"really" there shows what a good job the programmers have done.

But talking about this subject is interesting anyway (for me and a few
others, at least.) Indeed, I learned something *historically*
interesting in this thread, namely what the oval looked like. (BTW,
thanks to everybody who responded to this question, and also the one
regarding the names of the turns.)

But, brace yourself, there will be 3rd party N2=>GPL convertors,
paintkits and telemetry programs in no time. When I look into my
crystal ball, I see "TSP's GPL touring car patch", a "GPL oval track
racing league" and even cars with wings. Horrible, horrible. Hard
times are coming for you. :)

All in fun, I did make it over the barrier to the banking.  Go here for a
screenshot:

You can't go any further than I am in the picure.  The darker part of the track
angles to the grass which is as far as you can drive - if you can make it over the
banking ;)

How the hell do you work that one out?
There's no motion blur or skid marks, so why do you think it's going
backwards?
