Well Paul, I haven't loaded up Heat in months...but here is the
REAL Life procedure.
When the track is small like Bristol, and the teams have to split up, the
cars are assigned by qualifying. So if you Qualify in the top 25 you'll be
pitted on the front row(or possibly even fewer on the front row, I can't
remember Bristol's pit row assignments.) , if you are in the 2nd slower
qualifying group, you'll be pitted on the back row. Being on the back row
is a HUGE disadvantage, because you have to follow the Safety Car(Euro Term)
or Pace Car around the track to the back pits...His speed is regulated and
cars pitting up in front can get in and out and then go full speed to catch
up to the pack. So the back lane pitters are constantly stuck in the pack.
Sometimes a fast car will have a problem in qualifying, get stuck in the
back lane, and spend the whole race passing cars(sshhh don't tell the F1
guys that happens!) only to loose 10 to 15 spots when the next caution flag
is thrown.
I'll boot up Heat this weekend,(Hopefully) and double check the procedure
in the sim. REMIND ME if I forget.
