I pit on the very first chance I have. Make sure you change the pit
stop settings though. It wants to give you 4 tires, fix damage and
fill your gas tank, by default, which takes forever. You can leave
the damage, get 2 or 0 tires and you definitely want just a "splash
'n' go" for the fuel. When I beat it, I left the worn tires.
Driving this scenario, like many of the others in Heat, rewards
"contact" driving. I found that by using another car as a cushion on
the outside, I could go into the first corner much faster and
eventually "scrape them off" on that part of the back wall where it
juts out.
Likewise, going into the corner at the end of the long fast back
section, have someone on the outside and you can use them to stay off
the wall and scrub off some speed. This technique is very helpful if
you haven't changed your tires and have no grip left.
I always find myself in about 3rd or 2nd with a lap or two left using
this technique. You can then get agressive about blocking the other
cars with new tires in order to stay at 6th or above. My best finish
is 2nd.
