N3 Indy Pit Lane Question

N3 Indy Pit Lane Question

by Phil Le » Sat, 11 Mar 2000 04:00:00

As a Brit who has NEVER seen Indy, I was curious about the way cars exit the
pit lane in real life.  Do they join the track in the short chute or wait
till the back straight before rejoining?

Cheers

Phil

That depends.  During practice/race, the cars re-enter the track on
the back straight while during qualifying, they pull out onto the
track as soon as they exit the pits.

IIRC, NASCAR rules REQUIRE you pass turn 2 before you merge onto the
track.  I think it's the same at EVERY track.

That's a good rule (one which I wasn't aware of too). I suppose it
prevents the faster cars hitting the slower cars rejoining the race,
because if they've already gone past the second corner, those cars
will be at a more competative speed.

All cars I've seen at IMS - of course, they only have run Indy and NASCARS
but I digress - they require that you stay on the warmup lane until the
backstraight.  Think about it - if someone came shooting up from the warmup
lane into the short-chute, in traffic, they'd have no way to get out of the
racing line in Turn 2 and would be going way too slow...
