GPL Sound Problem

by Aaro » Tue, 26 Nov 2002 22:33:36

I just reinstalled GPL for the first time in over a year. I applied all of
Papy's patches and there D3D patch. I then downloaded all of GPLEA's cars
and sound update. The problem is there is horrible static coming from
whatever car I drive. Even before the sound patch I had this problem. I
tried reducing the number of AI sounds heard from 8 to 16 and no
improvement. I also ran dxdiag and reduced sound acceleraton but still no
better. Here are my specs:

Asus A7V133 MB
AMD 1.2 Ghz
512MB PC133 SDRAM
128MB GeForce TI4400
SB Live! Value

I have every racing sim from Papy, plus many other "sims" on my PC and they
play without any problems.

Be sure you have the latest 4n1 drivers, www.viaarena.com and the latest
sblive drivers.

This is a common problem with the SB Live/5.1 and some Audigy owners.

The v.3509 (dated Nov '01 iirc) drivers from Creative's site seem to work
for many, for others (myself included) the best option is to run dxdiag.exe,
go to the sound page and turn the acceleration down to basic (one above
none).

It all clicks into place - the reason Papyrus simulate better than everybody
else is....
<drumroll>

They have invented a whole new numbering system, a whole new subset of
mathematics where you can reduce an 8 and get 16...
Wow, are those guys geniuses or what?

Just go to the volume icon on your task, turn the volume in there down to
3/4 on Play Control and Wave/Direct Sound then adjust the volume to your
liking with your speakers volume control.

Dang it, neither of those options work for me.  Still stuck with a dual boot
to WinME :(

Nope, that doesn't work either...that would only fix clipping distortion
problems.

Have you tried changing your sound files to all 8-bit or all 16-bit?

I still get a little bit of crackling when I've turned the volume up in
windows, but it's better since I changed to all 8-bit sounds. I haven't
tried all 16-bit, couldn't find 8 different ones I liked ;-)

Hmm...I might try converting all my sound files to 8-bit...or vice versa.

This static problem is very erratic. When I'm alone on the track in practice
I can simply press the "pause" key and when I resume racing the sound is
fine. When I start a race the pause trick does nothing, but within the first
lap the sound will clear up by itself. It's just unbearable to listen to
until then. I have all the latest drivers for my PC, and every other game on
my system runs perfect. I never had this problem with the exact same
hardware on Win98, just WinXp Pro.

Ah ok so it's XP your having the problem in. My earlier post fixes it for
win98 but as far as i know the only fix for XP is to get a Audigy or Audigy2
card. Would be worth it to buy one and test it, if it fixes it great, if not
just return the card.

Same problem.  My sound screws up when I crash the car.  I just live
with by hitting F2 and returning back to the game.  Just XP and 5.1
soundcards it seems.  When I used my onboard sound, I didn't have this
problem.  I have a cmedia 5.1 soundcard btw.  I turned down the
hardware acceleration but it seems to***up my ohter games.
