GPL Sound Problem in Windows NT?

by Andy Coo » Fri, 16 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a problem with sound when running GPL under Windows NT. Basically the
*sound* response is not immediate and smooth. For example, when I blip the
throttle it's almost as if the sound is being updated every quarter second
or so instead of every frame (37fps). Everything else (the graphics,
joystick response, etc) runs perfectly at a solid 37fps. Obviously this is
very off-putting!!

This problem occurs with the following OS/Soundcard combinations:

Windows NT4 SP5, Turtle Beach Pinnacle (ISA) v3.02
Windows NT4 SP5, Ensoniq Soundscape VIVO (ISA) v3.00.11
Windows 2000 Beta3, Turtle Beach Pinnacle (ISA) v3.02 or v4.05

The rest of the system is:

Pentium II Celeron 300a o/c'd to 450Mhz
Abit BH6 mobo
196MB RAM

OpenGL v2.56
Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI card
Plenty of disk space
GPL patched to v1.1

The sim runs *perfectly* in Windows 95, but I would prefer not to have to
reboot every time I want to play GPL! All other sound enabled apps and games
run just fine, so I suspect that this is a problem with interaction between
Windows NT, GPL and the soundcard drivers.

Has anyone else managed to run GPL in Windows NT with perfect sound? If so,
with what soundcard(s)? PCI or ISA? Has anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks

Andy.

> Hi,

Hello.

The bad news - this is a known problem with Windows NT 4 and
DirectX 3, there is nothing that can be done about it.

The good news - this problem doesn't exist with Windows 2000 and
DirectX 7.

Of course, Windows 2000 has problems of it's own with respect to
***, most are due to the current lack of drivers though.

GPL Sound Problem in Windows NT?

Same problem here, first i thought that it was creative not being able to
produce good NT drivers but now as you say other cards have problems too.
BTW how's the stability of GPL under GPL. Mine seems to like to crash every
now and then.

GPL Sound Problem in Windows NT?

Thanks for the info, at least now I know it's not my config.

Assuming you mean stability of GPL under *NT*, I found it to be very stable
indeed, not crashing once so far i.e. much better than windows 95 which has
crashed several times. Yet another reason to run GPL in NT (for me, anyway)
:-)

Andy.
