Will GP2 run under Windows NT 4.0

by Richard Beriaul » Sun, 27 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm considering upgrading from Windows 3.11 to windows NT 4.0 and
I'd like to know if the OS upgrade will let me use GP2 whenever I want
without having to reboot the system with floppies and DOS.

Anybody running NT 4.0 and GP2 out there?

You're better off compatibility wise, going with Windows95.  It is 32
bit and still offers a lot better DOS compatibility...

I"m running Windows NT 4.0 and GP2 does'nt run in a DOS window ( or
full screen). I reboot to DOS....Apparently NT does't like software
calls to hardware devices.

Keep your DOS intact if you like GP2!

I realize Windows95 is not fully 32 bit, it's more hybrid, 16/32 bit.
But it's NOT a 16 bit OS.  You can still run 32 bit apps with it
(which you can even do on Windows 3.x with some work)

BTW, the P200s don't run "like a sack of ...." it's the PPro 200s, and
it's only on 16 bit code, which, like it or not, is still heavily
entrenched in the Windows environment.  It's gonna take a couple years
before all the apps are over to good, solid 32 bit code. THEN we can
jump ship.

But if you're gonna run NASCAR Racing, I would think you'd be better
off with Windows95 over NT 4.0

However, if you're running NASCAR RACING on NT 4.0, let me know how it
runs.

I've not run it, but I'm pretty sure, and you better check this out, that
NT 4.0 has absolutely no DOS support, including DOS in a window.  But,
fortunately, NT 4.0 features the ability to dual boot, therefore, you
could have one option to boot to WIN95/DOS (or 3.11/DOS) and the other
for NT 4.0.  I believe that this is the only way to run DOS software.

NT 4.0 DOS support is minimal.  They do have a DOS-window available
(just like NT 3.51), but it is a VERY RESTRICTIVE environment.
Basically, the program being run must not try to make any direct
hardware calls.  There will be no sound support, no svga support and
minimal support for any other system intensive activities.  Basically,
the only games you can run are those designed for win95, though there is
no guarantee that they will work.

I wanted to confirm what Robert wrote above. A friend of mine works
for Microsoft in NT support. He confirmed that this is true. He said
that you can not run any DOS software that tries to directly access
hardware.  He told me the only way to run GP2 is to have a DOS FAT
partition that contains DOS and all of your DOS games. There is a
boot manager that comes with NT. It lets you boot into DOS or NT. You
obviously have to boot into DOS to run GP2.
