On a similar note, I'm considering a switch to NT4. Would a DirectX game
such as F1RS work better, worse or just the same as under 95?

I thought you *could* play GP2 under NT, but you just don't get any
sound?

I don't think F1RS will work under NT 4.0, because NT is only DX3 and I
think F1RS requires DX5......I haven't tried it yet, though......Maybe I'll
try it and see...

Thanks for the info. I will not go back to DX3, so I guess I'll wait a bit
with NT.

Well, it does. I run it on PII-266/64/MilleniumII 4MB/ NT4 SP3 (DX3), but it
really crawls:(

The biggest reason for that is video hardware acceleration is software
emulated under NT 4.0.  Under NT 5.0 video acceleration really is DMA and
should be fast.  I plan to run this and several other games on my multi-proc
under 5.0 when I get the chance.  I doubt if they were written as
multi-threaded applications however.

Well, it's in sync with the rest of that "OS" then,
wouldn't you agree? ;-)

Hell no!

NT4 is the first good OS Microsoft ever produced, IMO. It simply wasn't
designed with games in mind.

I don't think F1RS runs very well under Unix either. ;-)

I have seen people claim that they managed to by running in VGA and without
sound. Not that this is a big help :-)

Would you be surprised to find out that the 3dfx version of Quake II
for Linux suffers only 3-5% performance loss from real multitasking
compared to the windows version?

Couple that with the fastest tcp/ip stack on this planet, and I guess
you'd have a great environment for multiplayer racing games over the
net. With the growing popularity of Linux I would not be surprised
at all to see some companies taking note like corel did the other day.

Regards,

Uwe

Not at all. I'm surprised it isn't faster. Difference: "Quake II for Linux"
isn't written for Windows 95. F1RS is, and NT isn't Windows 95.

No offense, but you're sounding a bit like I did when I tried to convince
everyone that OS/2 was the OS of the future. Sad as it may be, Linux is not
going to be a *** platform, ever.

Hmmm, would you like to bet on it? One could argue that Linux/Unix has
been the first ever *** platform in history, with old beauties like
sail, Nethack, xblast, xtrek, or xpilot about, especially in the
networked game area. The current pre*** of Windows doesn't mean
it'll stay that way forever, and with competitors like BeOS and Linux
entering the market I find it as hard to believe that nt x.0 (remember
the big merger ;-) is ever going to be a *** platform more than the
others will be. Only time and consumers will tell.

BTW, I really like the fact F1RS II will be out for the N64.
