TM Pro Digital and NFS:HS - t'ain't natural!

Re: input delays?

I'm a newbie when it comes to racing sims but for the occasional stop
at a video game station when I was a kid.  I love driving so I'm
usually pretty good at them.

Then I picked up a Thrustmaster NASCAR Pro Digital USB wheel, and
NFS:HS, thinking I'd just go to town.

Trouble is, I found a HUGE learning curve waiting for me.  Now that
it's been a few days, I'm better, but I can't help but think things
aren't like they should be.

It seems as though there's a significant delay between when I turn the
wheel and when anything happens on-screen.  It's not seconds, but
enough to throw me WAY off on timing.

Are these delays just par for the course in sims?  Or is there a
setting I need to change?  Or is my computer just not fast enough?
I've cut out some graphics features but it doesn't really help.

I'm running an AMD K6-300 with 192M RAM and a Matrox Millennium G200,
so it's no slouch...  Drivers are all up-to-date.

Your feedback is appreciated...

Bill

Bill,
I am sorry to say that it IS your computer.  k6-2 300 just won't cut it
these days, the millenium, while being a good card isnt really a voodoo 3 or
TNT 2.  I would suggest that if you have the money go for a fairly high
Celeron + Voodoo 3.  Racing Sims are notoriously bad for hogging CPUs and
turning what usually is a quick machine into a dog.

Think of it this way....you'll HAVE to upgrade with the coming of the great
Microprose F1GP3 !! :)

Good luck, happy racing

Ashley

You have of course got it working through Direct 3d? I.e. used the 3d device
setup to choose direct 3d.  It MAY be running in Software mode.

Yes, checked that, thanks.

Ashley, nooo!  Say it ain't so!  I mean, I'd dearly love to upgrade
the pooter, but there is the small matter of this hole in my pocket...
As Oscar Wilde said, it is better to be rich than to be poor, if only
for financial reasons.

Perhaps I shall have to find an older sim and get used to the wheel
that way, for now...

Ashley, you have triggered woeful disappointment within me.  But I
shall not blame you; indeed, only the messenger you are.

Many thanks,
Bill
