Best inexpensive Video Card for NFS:HS and NFS:PU

by Z06 » Sun, 26 May 2002 01:52:28

Hi

I have a Voodoo3 3500 that is getting dated and can't run the new games.

What is the best card that isn't too expensive so I can play the new games
(F1-2001 and other driving games) and still be able to run NFS:HS and
NFS:PU.

I don't want to spend $300+ for a GeForce4 4600 if I can get away with
a less expensive card.

Thanks for your ideas!

Please post here or email me.

I don't really have an answer, but when I went from my voodoo 3 to a geforce
2, NFS:HS graphics quality took a total dive.. it seems like the game was
designed to be run with a 3dfx card w/ glide ..anything else makes it just
horrible.

There may be patches or something out there for the game.. but I haven't
seen any.

In relation to your question, I think GeForce 2 cards are pretty cheap and
they work great, my GF2 MX-400 does the F1 2002 demo, GPL, N2002 / N4 really
well..so you may wanna check on those..

Geforce 2Mx will run NFS:pu very well and those are dead cheap now, sub 50
even.

Gary,

You don't say what CPU you are running or if you are looking for an AGP or
PCI card.

I'd recommend a GeForce4 4200 64MB or 128MB versions ($179-$199 retail,
cheaper online).  Any GeForce3 Ti200 would also work great for closer to
$130 or so online.  ATI Radeon 8500 64MB or 8500LE 128MB is also an option
for about the same price.  See www.anandtech.com for some reviews.  I am
running a GF4 4400 right now with great results, but with a pretty fast
processor (AMD 1700+ XP).  The 4400 runs about $230 online now and is very
close to the speed of a 4600.

I used to have a GF2 GTS and it ran NFS:PU, F1 2000CS, Nascar 2002, GPL,
ratbag games, etc. just fine at around 800x600 with a AMD Duron 800.  Any of
the above cards would run great provided you have a reasonably fast CPU
(>700 Mhz or so).

Hope this helps.

-Dave

I have a PIII-500 Intel and AGP.

Thanks!

For NFS I don't know but, on F1-2001 and Nascar 2002, processor is going to
be a BIG problem. Calculating the physics, AI, and so on for a lot of cars
requires a lot of processor power, not graphical power (with you can always
tweak to lower the resolution), but this is not true for the rest.

Only a new video board is not going to be enough. I would say a bare minimum
for a good racing experience would be at least a PIII-1G.

For the video board, I would suggest a GeForce2 Ti/450 or a GeForce4 MX420
that will cost about U$ 100.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I think it's time to build a new system, my MB can only handle an 800 max.

I'll just leave this system as is, with the PIII-500 and Voodoo3-3500.

games.

So spend $200 for GF4 4200, or $150 for GF3Ti200/500...

But do they work with NFS:PU and NFS:HS too?

Which drivers do you use?

Thanks!
