NFS-HS Modem games won't work

We can't get a modem game going on the NFSHS.  We connect, we start the race
and then whoever is the answering modem disconnects.  We tried all the BS
tings the ea suggested and still no good.  We're both running PIII 500 w/
3com modems and voodoo 3 3000's so hardware should not be an issue.  We
connect at 26400 and 28800 consistently.

Anyone else have these problem with this or any NFS version?
