F1 2000 is superb !!!!

by Andre Warring » Sat, 18 Mar 2000 04:00:00

A friend of mine downloaded it from the internet to test it.
He is evil, I know.
But, I played it, and DAMN WHAT A SIM !!!!
I never expected it to be this good!
I only played it for about ten minutes, but with all the help
functions off, I couldn't drive one lap around Monza without
completely crashing my car, reminding me of my first days with GPL :)

Graphically superb and very smooth, sound is a little less impressive
but I'm sure people will make beter engine sounds for it, and my first
impression of the physics are simply amazing. Again, that's the first
impression, I didn't have time to do all sorts of stunts to test the
physics.

The only thing that was a little dissappointing was the force
feedback, I only could feel the curbes, but maybe that can be adjusted
somewhere. As I said, I couldn't check out all the features in those
ten minutes.

Oh, and it does support more than one controller at the same time :)

I can't wait until this game is in the stores! To hell with GP3, I
want F1 2000 !!!

interesting, could you be a bit more specific about the details ? w
hat aspect of the physics do you like especially ?
How smooth is the game running (sys.requirements) ?
is there a good replay mode (GPL quality?)
Do the setup options make sense ?
Is the AI good ?
True 3D track surface ? Are the times on the tracks realistic ?
Is no-aids faster than Brake Help etc ?
Is there a LAN multiplayer mode?
can you watch other cars on the track during qualifying and practice ?
what about the crash physics, are they realistic or some stupid cumulative
damage system, and is the damage visible (unlike SCGT) ?

thanks if you can answer some of these,
among others, they make or break a sim for me

cheers,
Alex

As I said, only played the game for about ten minutes, so some short
answers....

It just felt good, with the car spinning and sliding all over the
place. I watched a in-car footage of Senna driving on Monaco 2 days
ago, and when I drive F1 2000 on Monaco, it just looked and felt the
same!

He has a PII 450 with Voodoo II SLI, but he couldn't get the game
working with the voodoo card. So he played with his Viper 550 card,
and even with that card the game run very smooth with all options on
the highest level! This was in training mode with no AI cars.

I saw that there was a replay option, but didn't test it. But there
are very many cam views while driving, so I guess that the replays
will be excellent.

Didn't test it.

Only drove in training mode.

The tracks are true 3d, and Monaco (only track I tested) was really
perfect, with all the bumps and hills on the right spot.

I guess so...

Don't know... stupid, I should've looked for this. I'll call him
tonight and ask him.

Don't know

The crash physics appear to be excellent!! I made some real bad
crashes, and the damage model really looked superb. Driving without a
front wing is REALLYdifficult on the highest level :)
Also I made some big railing crashes at Monaco, and both my wheels
were pointed inwards at different angles, looking very realistic.

See above.

Maybe there still are some flaws with the physics or the AI, it takes
a little bit more than ten minutes to test this more precize.
But a first impression is very important for me, I removed Sos 37,
Ford Racing, Psychnosis F1 99 and Lemans 24 hours after a couple of
minutes driving, but this game gave me a superb impression.
I didn't expect this, after the letdowns of the above game I was very
preserved, but they really did a good job on this one.
Compared to this, GP2 finally looks like an old game :)

D3d looks poor, sounds arent timed with the action, such as shifting. But
overall seems like a decent game.

Downloaded it too, looks good, but very low fps on my

5 cars enabled) with
other cars. When testing track fps is reasonable.

Should be better with my config I would think though.
