FF wheel

by Ahti » Tue, 17 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I need a FF wheel for GPL and I need it NOW ;-)

I'm thinking about MS or Logitech.  I like the logitech _wheel_
definitely more, but the pedals seems a bit small with short
travel and loose. Ok, I read you can stiffen them up...

But the MS pedals seems just like perfect, but the hard plastic
wheel does not feel right.

Please help me - which one should I go for.  Are the Logitech
pedals OK to play with?  I hope they are!
I'd be very happy to hear if anyone compared these two wheels
and could give us some recommendations.

Kind Regards,
Ahti

FF wheel

I looked at both as they were the same price.
I was upgrading from a T2 which was fine.
I researched as much as I could on both on the net and mags etc. both have
their supporters and detractors.

My thoughts on the MSFF is that it is a good wheel but I did not like the
noise it makes due to the plastic gears it uses to simulate the feel. I
initially felt that the recessed gear change buttons would be uncomfortable,
but after using it I had no complaints. On the pedals, they looked plain and
very light (sliding factor on carpet) however, as the wheel was set up in a
store with wooden floors I can't tell you what the stability is on other
surfaces. Compared to the T2 pedals they are very light and to me the feel
of the pedals not to my taste, and perhaps someone who owns a MSFF could
tell you how they feel after a bit of use.
I tried Colin McGrae Rally and I liked the general feel the MSFF
transmitted.

I ended up buying the Logitech due to product loyalty and on the reviews I
had found. Plus I liked the look of it.
Having used it for a week I can say that your concern with the pedals is
nothing to worry about, I am adjusting to the feel of the pedals. I find
that the base is stable and the foot rest is a nice touch. There is not much
travel in the pedals, if they had the feel of the T2 pedals there would be
no contest.

The wheel in play is excellent, the grip can get a little slippery after
several hours use but a quick wipe with a cloth sorts this out. The paddles
are to me more comfortable to use over the MSFF, but I think it wouldn't
really matter once you got used to it.
I've read comments where some would like 270 degree turn of the Logitech
wheel (it turns 180 degree). The T2 had 270 degree, I had some concern about
this until I actually tried it in a game (TOCA2) and personally it didn't
make any real difference. I believe this is due to the calibration set up
and I think some people are being a little picky here. I can't remember how
much turn the MSFF had but at the time I used it, I did not notice any
turning problems.

The clamp system is good an improvement over the T2 but only because the
grip on the clamps aren't to *** your hands. (not mine, but the kids and
wife who have to remove it to use the keyboard which is moved when playing)
MSFF clamp looked like a better method but I was unsure how long it would
keep its tension after prolonged removal and re-attaching. This again could
be answered but someone who owns one.

I like the way the Logitech is quiet when using and the only thing I see
that is really different is that there is no button on the controller to
turn off the FF. In saying this , I have to wonder why MS felt that they had
to include it after all why bother buying the wheel if you want to play a
game without FF., unless it does not  support it.

Logitech has a update site for game profiles and I would expect MS has the
same.

In conclusion, if for no other reason the Logitech is newer and the have had
the advantage of probably pulling apart the MS product to see it's
construction and where they may improve on it. The cable system is probably
the single most difference between the two.

What the lifespan of either of these two products I wish I knew, because
this is probably the most important issue that I have not been able to find
out. If the Logitech lasts as long as my T2(which is still going strong
after about 4 years) I 'LL be happy.

You won't go to far wrong with either wheel, but I think the Logitech has
the edge for now

Hope this helps you.

FF wheel

I've just bought the LWFF yesterday and I'm very happy with it. IMO, the
wheel feels much better than the MS (I've tried the MS only unplugged, but I
didn't like it).
To Stuart Coutts: It was me, who started the thread about the LWFF 180 degs.
travel, I was just wondering, if that really is a disadvantage in GPL, but
now I can say that it is not. When feeling the wonderful GPL FF, I don't
give a damn about travel anymore :-)
About the pedals: I think you can get used to their short travel and light
springs, but I use my old TM F1 pedals plugged to my SBLive gameport (Yes,
that works at least in GPL, you just have to make sure, that the old wheel
(or some joystick) is connected to the pedals and that they get ID1 and the
LWFF ID2).
So if you already own a non-FF wheel with good pedals, don't worry about the
LWFF pedals, you can use your old ones!
Hope, That helps!

Stuart,

Thanks a lot for your in depth review of these wheels.
It sure did help. It actually helped so much, that
I went and bought the Logitech FF wheel and I am
very very happy with it.  The wheel feels excellent
and the pedals are definitely good enough for me.
They actually feel very comfortable and still accurate
enough for smooth driving.

I downloaded the latest drivers for the wheel and some
recommended core.ini settings for it from here and the
FF is just great!  I love the feeling when you are
just about to oversteer and you feel it in your
wheel nicely! :-)

Kind Regards,
Ahti
