N4 regular wheel or FF wheels

I have a Thrustmaster Pro Digital racing wheel now. It is not the second
edition it is the original digital wheel. It works good with my games. But I
was thing of getting rid of it and moving to a FF wheel. Will the experience
be a lot better.

If so which would you guys suggest. The Microsoft FF wheel, or the Saitek FF
wheel. Those are the two I have been looking at. The Microsoft wheel goes
for $129. The Saitek is on clearance for $79.50.

Is there much difference between these two.

Thanks for the help.

Forget the Saitek.  I've never heard a good word about it.   Very cheaply
made.

The MSFFW is good hardware.  Best pedals in the business.

However, the SideWinder software is frustrating, and it's pretty much a
"Take it or leave it" release.  MS is not known for updating this software.
Ever.

Win2K operation is Dicey.

If you get a MSFFW, do NOT get the Gameport version.  Make sure you get the
USB version.  Even if you find a Gameport version cheap, skip it.  The
SideWinder software it comes with is not, and never will be, Win2K
compatible.

The version that comes with the USB model is _barely_ compatible, sometimes.

Why not the gameport version? The USB version is considerably more CPU
hungry than the gameport version, I've tried both and kept my old gameport
wheel. I missed the beginning of this thread so if it's because he's running
win 2000 and it's incompatible with the gameport version thats a good reason
;)

If you ever intend to do anything under Win2K, you MUST avoid the Gameport
version.

The only driver that works, at all (sometimes), is the built-in SideWinder
mini-driver, and you loose almost all features of the hardware when you do
use it.

The 3.02 software that ships with the Gameport version will not install at
all under Win2K, and since it hasn't been updated in, oh, 2 years or so it's
apparant that MS has no intention of doing so.

Hell, they won't even update the newer 4.0 software for the USB models!

I'm not sure I agree that the USB version uses more cycles thant the
gameport version.  I have both, and it doesn't feel that way to me.  You
could be right, it just doesn't feel that way.

I'm considering getting win 2000, but it won't affect my *** at all, it
will be installed on my other PC which is a work machine ;)
I tried the MSFF wheels on my older PC P2 333, 128MB RAM, Voodoo3 3000
running win 98se. In GPL with the gameport version I maintained a constant
36fps but with the USB version it dropped to about 30 at certain points on
the track. With a faster system the difference may be negligible or even un
noticable. I took the USB wheel back before upgrading to my current Athlon
so can't compare them on this machine.

Just another question, will the version 4.0 software that works with Win
2000 work with the gameport wheel ?

Any USB device is a system bus hog!

That is why I try to limit USB use.  I have a Logitech FF GP wheel and
it is great (the pedals do suck a bit but the wheel is hot).

The very besty wheel out there imo is the Act Labs Force RS. I ve compared
it to the micrisoft and the new and old logitech and its is the strongest
force and the most dynamic feel by far! :)
