MS Precesion Racing Wheel & split axis with XP

Hi,
Has anyone using a MS USB Sideinder Precision Racing Wheel with Windows XP
gotten split axis pedals to work with GPL and F12002/GTR?

I have the 4.0 software installed on my new XP Home machine and everything
works flawlessly with combined pedals.  However, when I configure the
Sidewinder software for split axis pedals, GPL will not allow me to assign
my brake pedal at all, even though it does show up as working as axis 2 in
the calibrate controller window.

F12002/GTR works fine with combined pedals, but with split axis, the brake
pedal is either all the way on or all the way off, you can't modulate it
properly.

I'm starting to wonder why I came out of (sim racing) retirement :-(

Just a guess but, in GPL at least, did you check the second controller
screen?  There's a little arrow pointing to the right in the lower right-hand
corner of the first controller screen.

Sorry, can't help with the F12002/GTR2002 problem.

Hope this helps....

Tony, do you have any other game controllers either plugged in or
setup so that they appear (connected or not) in Game Controllers in
the Control Panel?

In the past I've had some flaky issues with split-axis and having
other controllers plugged in at the same time as my MS wheel.  If you
do have other controllers, I recommend disabling them in device
manager when you want to race.

Otherwise, does the test tab in the properties for the wheel seem ok?

Hi Jason,
I have no other controllers plugged in.  The Sidewinder is the only
controller displayed and it is in position #1.  This is a new system and
there has never been anything other than this Sidewinder installed on it.
From the Sidewinder test menu screen, everything appears to be working fine.
I called Microsoft support but they were not any help.  His recomendation
was to go back to Windows 98.  Are you using split axis pedals for GPL on
your system?

Sorry, but I don't see the little arrow you're refering to and I don't see
any second controller screen.  Could you do a screen print and send it to

Unplug the wheel from the usb port...start GPL....then plug it back in.

Now go to the Calibration Menu...

If all is not ok,unplug the wheel again...then plug it back in.

If that doesnt work then check you have no problems with your usb set up.

Yes, I use split axis in GPL, N2002, and F1-2002/GTR-2002 without any
problems, plus it's worked fine in numerous other games (Rally Trophy,
Rally Masters, DTR2, etc etc).

I'm not really sure where to go from here if it's the only controller
you've ever had installed on this machine and you haven't been
manually adjusting direct-input settings via dxtweak.  The only thing
I can think of otherwise is to make sure that you save your profile
after you change the wheel to split axis and make sure that the
Sidewinder Software applet is running in the system tray.

just so you know you aren't alone, i'm having the exact problem you describe
with rally trophy and gtr.  no matter what i try, i can't get split axis to
work.  a microsoft wheel on a microsoft operating system should work.

hmmm.......wouldn't i have issues with other usb devices then?  i don't have
any problems with any of my other game devices or my usb adsl modem.  maybe
it's the wheel itself.  i'm not sure.

I may try re-installing XP.  I'm suspect because after I installed the DVD
software that came with my Abit Ti4200 card, the system crashed and now I
get an error msg every time I reboot.  Worth a try, I guess...

If you're using System Restore, go to a Restore Point prior to installing
the DVD software.  Would save you a complete reinstall/reformat.  You could
also try running "sfc /scannow" without the quotes from Start/Run to see if
a system dll file was changed or corrupted.
