N4-What Does Force Feedback Feel Like?

by Paul Jage » Sat, 07 Apr 2001 01:40:41

The subject heading might seem like a silly question, but I am not convinced
that I have FF working properly in N4. The only 'feeling' I have is when I
turn. The wheel stiffens up the harder I turn into corner.  This though is
the only sensation I have. For example, should I feel anything as I drive
down a straight (apart from needing to keep the wheel to the right), or if I
hit a car/wall should the wheel shudder?

For information, I have a MSFF wheel, Athlon 900, 256mb ram, SB Live, and
Hercules GForce 2 card.

Thanks

N4-What Does Force Feedback Feel Like?

I think I am safe in saying that FF in N4 is not real good. (The
implementation that is or the effects for that matter). I used FF for a
while in N3 after getting my LWFF and it was a novalty, but it wore off as
soon as I began to realize the little bit of feedback I was getting wasn't
doing aything but slowing me down and actually caused some wrecks by causing
unnecessary over correction.

I have sinced disabled FF in my sims and will dump my LWFF as soon as Thomas
can get me a TSW 2 Cup built. (Non FF wheel and pedals)

To get more feed back I would suggest turning up the settings wherever MS
lets you adjust the wheel's settings and possibly find the section in the
game .INI file (thats how it was in N3) and step up the effects there as
well. Then you may get some more feedback from the contact and corners, you
really don't get much on the straights as you mentioned.

My suggestion is to play with it on your own time and race w/o FF, as FF
turns out to be more hurtful then helpful to *** racing (online
anyway).

Best of luck,

edb

My opinion is exactly opposite. I think the Force effects in N4 are
splendid and I find it to be a real advantage online over drivers that dont
have it or cant get used to it! For me it adds realism and in my case that
makes it a little easier and ALOT more fun!

N4-What Does Force Feedback Feel Like?

by George Lewi » Sat, 07 Apr 2001 08:26:57

for me, I'd like force feedback in the seat of the pants - that's how
you drive em' for real. I know, that's far off in sim-land, but it'd
be nice.  how is the FF in the sim?  I haven't tried it yet and don't
want to waste $190 for nothing.

can you give me the beginner's gee-whiz so I'll be likely to try it
out?  like - how does it feel - what does it help? give me some
examples. like I've heard someone say it helped them save a loose race
car when it breaks loose in the turns.  you can compensate pretty well
when you're "in the seat" but it's alot harder without any feeling.
will FF help this kinda stuff?  how about when the tires get old and
the car is slipping and sliding all over the place - you know, the
wheelspin you get coming out of the turns at Martinsville when your
tires are 80 laps old - does it help this out and in what way?

thanks.
