MadCatz Andretti Wheel?

by Andrew Turne » Wed, 24 May 2000 04:00:00

OK, well, I haven't bought a wheel yet. I was about to order the Act
Labs wheel when I saw some complaints about the pedals - quite frankly,
I can see how bad pedals would kill an otherwise good wheel, so I looked
around a little more.

I came across (on the web) the MadCatz Andretti wheel - it seems to be
built really well, and with BIG PEDALS....

Anyone use this wheel or know anything about it? I haven't really seen
it discussed here.

Thanks

Andrew

This wheel kicks ass assuming you can live without Force Feedback.

No it does not.  The pedals are a bit short on throw,  I would not
recommend it for GPL, but I think some guys are using its USB port for the
wheel and using whatever pedals they want.  They work great for SCGT
allowing me to trailbrake very very well in the Saleen Mustang, and well it
really needs its nose down entering a corner to get a good turn in.

Thanks!

In fact, while looking around today, I came across your site and read the
review. It sure swayed me toward this wheel.

Thanks again,

Andrew

MadCatz Andretti Wheel?

I had one for quite some time and hated to sell it. My wife doesn't share my
affection for collecting wheels. It's sturdy, well made, pretty, and
precise. The stick shifter is located in a nice spot. The pedals have a nice
heavy base and are very well made, but are a bit of a paradox. Maybe over
engineered. The non slip pedal surfaces worked too well. Definately need
socks or slippery soled slippers. The pedal travel is very long, but the
last 1/4 to 1/3 or the throw was dead travel. This was easily fixed by
opening the base and putting a shim on the base under the pedal levers. The
pedal pads themselves are also spring loaded  to the point where you lose
the real pedal feel. Unhooking the springs and tightening the pads fixed
that. All in all, one of the most enjoyable non FF wheels I've used.Within a
day of getting it, I was knocking a second or 2 off my MTM2 lap times. If it
had split axis pedals, I would have kept it. But driving with split axis
makes a big difference for me, and I couldn't go back. Every once in a while
I like to squat the car and power out of a corner, and you need split axis
for that. If you do get it and end up using different pedals for split axis,
I wouldn't mind buying the Andretti pedals. They'd make a good project. Oh,
I haven't tried the non FF Act Labs RS or Logitech, so I don't know if these
are just as good. Othewise I  would say the precision of the Andretti wheel
is about as good as it can get. The wheel could use more padding though ;-)

Thanks Slot.

What wheel/pedals setup are you using now?

I was about to purchase the Act Labs stuff... I read through the modification
sections on your site - each one, in fact. This is what convinced me that there
may be a better setup than the Act Labs (FF or non-FF) without big-time mods.

Thanks,

Andrew

MadCatz Andretti Wheel?

by GTX_SlotCa » Thu, 25 May 2000 04:00:00

Usually I switch back and forth between the Force RS and the Ferrari wheel.
When I use the Ferrari, I use it with the RS Shifter. The Ferrari pedals are
the best 'out of the box' pedals I've ever used as far as ease of modulation
goes (good for GPL and NFS:PU). But my favorite pedals are the modified
Force RS pedals especially since I strengthened and damped the brake (I'll
finish that article some day). For the past week I've been exclusively using
the LWFF with RS Shifter and RS pedals. Some may not believe it, but I'm
still trying to give that wheel a fair shake. See, I got the LWFF after the
other 2 wheels. So when I started using it all I could do is compare it's
shortcomings with the others. But what if I had it first? I would have been
concentrating on it's good points, and not knowing what the others are
capable of, I may have been more willing to overlook its minor shortcomings
and enjoyed using it more. Then when I starting using the other wheels, I
would have still liked them better, but my attitude on the LWFF might have
been more positive. Well, at least that's my theory.
But again, to answer your question, usually I switch back and forth between
the Force RS and Ferrari with RS Shifter.

Oh, gee, thanks.

You've made my decision tough again. Oh well. ;)

Just wondering, too, if you've tried the Andretti pedals; from what I've read
they are pretty good.

MadCatz Andretti Wheel?

by david_j_wil.. » Fri, 26 May 2000 04:00:00

I bought the Andretti wheel last fall.  It worked with some sims, but
not with many others.  The word online was that the drivers had a
problem with the latest version of directx.  Their tech support was
useless, denying there was any problem and giving the stock advice --
make sure you have the latest drivers, reinstall, etc.  I gave up and
bought the LWFF.  I like Mario, but if the wheel and/or its drivers
won't work, other issues like the pedals are irrelevant.

Hi David,

I haven't heard anything about these problems before. I'm guessing you
haven't been able to solve them?

Which sims didn't the device work with?

thanks,

MadCatz Andretti Wheel?

Well I reviews racing wheel and the games they work with and I never
encountered a single game (and I have just about all of them) that
uses a wheel that didn't work with the Andretti whell and in most
cases was IMPROVED by using the wheel.

I'm curious to know which titles didn't work.  Mine is flawless
starting with DX6 through 7.0a using shipping drivers.  I recently
updated with website drivers (even though I had no reason to) and saw
no effect - either positive or negative.
