Anyone try Madcatz Andretti Racing Wheel yet?

by Milo » Tue, 16 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I was thinking of buying a Logitech racing wheel (w/o FF) when I came
across this review : http://www.racesimcentral.net/
. Has anyone try out this wheel yet? How is it compared to LF? TIA.

I bought the madcatch adretti wheel for my brother on his birthday. Are you
referring to a PC version, which I haven't seen, because this was for
Playstation. To be honest, he hardly uses it, finding the normal joypad far
more accurate and responsive. The Madcatz has a huge deadzone, no paddles
and poorly-angled foot pedals.  The pedals are almost vertical, making it
uncomfortable to angle your feet correctly.

I wouldn't bother with it if I were you - cheap, I know, but go for
something designed more for playing than looking at.

I've tried both -- I really like the rock-solid stability of the Mad Catz
Andretti wheel (it's digital).  The pedals are a little weird, but no worse
than the Logitech pedals, which are equally weird.  With the Andretti wheel,
you also get a stick shift, so that, combined with the digital output, makes
the Andretti Wheel a slight winner in my eyes (depending on the price
difference, of course).  Here's my take on the Andretti Wheel (plus a good
look at the pedals):

Enjoy!

i have the andretti wheel and i like it, good strong wheel, like john said
,the peddles are a little weird at first
but you get used to them,if your not wanting force feedback, i highly
recommend them!

Excellent review John!  Before reading it I was all set thinking I'd replace
my Nascar Pro with the one of the ActLabs wheels - couldn't make up my mind
to go with FF or not.  I'm actually quite happy with the Nascar Pro, except
that I find the jitters starting to bug me more and more.  But after reading
your review, I think I'd see a pretty good improvement with the Andretti
wheel and the price is right.

I do have a question about using multiple controllers however.  I'm using a
joystick switch hooked up to the gameport on my SoundBlaster PCI 512 card,
so I use the switch to activate either the Nascar Pro or the Sidewinder 3D
Pro joystick, and then use the Thrustmaster Pro Panel to select the device
in Windows.  Is this going to work the same with the digital Andretti wheel
and the joystick?  I can't use USB because my lowly Pentium 233MMX doesn't
have it.

The wheel is great.

The pedals are more like tractor-pedals.  When depressed fully, the damned
things are nearly horizontal!

You can't rest your heels on the pedal base.  You have to place your _whole_
foot on the pedals because the angle changes so drastically when they are
pressed.

It's a shame.  The wheel is top-notch, and the pedals are horse-poopie.
