I just bought Rfactor and I love the game - My only issue is that the frame
rates are pretty lousy. What kind of frame rates are you guys getting and
with what equipment?

I am getting from between 15 and 30 fps at 800X600 with the following system

Athlon 64 4000
Nvidia 6800 GT
2 gig Corsair ram
Asus SLI deluxe mainboard
win xp
Hardly anything running in the background

Thanks people!

I had similar frame rates with a slightly lesser system (A64/3200). Tryed
for months to get a decent frame rate. Turned out the culprit was the
Cool'n'Quiet utility that comes with the ASUS motherboard setup package. You
have to turn it off in the BIOS. Frame rate went from the high ***s -mid
20's to 100-120 fps. huge difference

This seems way too low. What AA & AF settings are you running with your
graphics card? rFactor frame rates are generally pretty good especially
compared with GT Legends.

Something isn't right!

I have an almost identical system  and am getting 35 (full grid,
online) to 60. This is with almost everything maxed. Do you have
Vertical Sync on?

Yes, I have v sinc on because if I dont, the game speeds up and slows down
randomly. I am not using any anti aliasing and running at 800X 600

Speeding up and slowing down is fairly common these days.  By using Vsync
you are capping your framerate.  I imagine that a fairly high refresh rate
would impact the fps as well.  My framerates vary,  but NEVER do they get
down to your max framerate and I've only got a 1st gen XP 64 3000.  So I'd
say,  be brave and turn off vsync and learn to be uncomfortable with the
idea of varied fps.
(also verify that your frontside bus setting in the bios is at 400 or 800
or whatever the max for your mb is. )

Anybody else care to verify the Cool'nQuiet theory ? Running ASUS mobo here
as well and not about to fiddle with something that's supposed to assist
with :
Reduces heat output from your PC
Quiet PCs for a quiet home
Can reduce PC power consumption

It certainly will cause an overhead and won't be active during game
playing. Maybe worth turning on if your PC is on for long periods doing
normal stuff like word processing and email or just idle. Then reboot
and turn off for games.

I was going to say I had seen other reports - then I realised it was
Dave on another forum :)

Thanks Tony. This PC is on almost 24/7. Will try a 3dmark05 with it off
though, to see if there's a marked difference. If so, might just have to
reboot before *** :)

Oh there's no doubt that Cool'n'quiet is a good thing sometimes. However why
not try it yourself? After all its easy enough to turn on and off and if it
is the source of your slowdown it'll be immediatly apparent when you check
CTRL + F for the framerate in game. As far as I can tell all CnQ is is a
throttling device for your powersupply thats matches PS output to your
powerneeds of the moment and switches fans to match heat output. With it off
the PC PS cooling fan runs at full speed all the time thus creating somewhat
more noise and putting more heat into the room. Mine has been totally
reliable since switching it off.
BTW I originally got the tip from some thread in either the GTR or rFactor
forums in RSC. No idea now which of the thousands that it was but its there
if you care to look :)

It has been reported that GPL and Nascar 2002/3 can do weird things if that
Cool'n'quiet is enabled. Nascar will drop to 1fps OR will be much too fast
OR will just not connect online.

Disabling all new'n'cool power saving features in a *** machine is a good
idea. I think it can be done with the Windows control panel power applet,
setting the computer to a desktop computer / always on.

It also changes the prosessor clock speed on the fly, which can do havoc to
online game syncronizations and general high-prosessor-usage game fps or
even speeds.

thats a *very* interesting bit of information that explains a lot of the
stuff I used to see when CnQ was enabled. Thanks for this

I heard similar stories about q&q causing some stutters and fps
slowdowns on ASUS boards. Remember: the best way to conserve power is to
switch your pc off when you're done with ***.

Cheers, uwe
