Sidewinder precision racing wheel USB

A got this for my birthday a couple years ago. I haven't had it hooked
up in a while and it seems that the software is uninstalled.
Furthermore, since I just moved I'm sure I will never find the disk
again. I've managed to set it up as a "HID-compliant game controller"
under Win98 but I can't seem to get it to work right in most games, and
I certainly can't program it. The main problem seems to be that the
pedals are not recognised correctly.

It seems as if MS does NOT have the software available for download. The
available sidewinder software is apparently for every MS game device
EXCEPT THIS ONE. Does anyone know where I can download the
drivers/programming software for this racing wheel?

You're pretty much out of luck if you don't have the original install disk
that came with the wheel. I found this to be the case when I moved (briefly)
from Win98SE to WinME - even the latest updates from the controllers section
of the Microsoft web site don't work correctly unless you have the original
CD on hand and the contents therein installed. Your only bet at this point
is to install Win2K or XP - the latter which I can confirm recognizes the
wheel right out of the box using built-in drivers...

Do a search for sidewinder 4.0 software on google, that's how I found it
when I lost my cd.  If you can't find it I could upload it if you want.

XP will recognize the wheel, but you still have to install the
Sidewinder 4.0 Software to use themes (and have the system tray
utility running - which is not necessary for theme functionality in
win98).  Without being able to use themes, the wheel is stuck with its
default settings, which are fine for me with the exception of
single-axis mode.  In other words, if you want to be able to properly
use the pedals, make sure you install the SW 4.0 software.

Your wheel requires the 4.0 software, which as you have found out, is not
available for download.  There have been no changes, bug fixes or anything
in over 2 years to this software :(

The downloadable version is 3.02 which is only for Game-Port devices.  It's
been even longer since that was updated.

It's even more complicated that this.  There are MULTIPLE versions of the
4.0 software.  Each different device has a customized version of the 4.0
software in the box, and it will not work with any other device than what it
shipped with.

That's right, if you have multiple Microsoft devices, you have to install
the same 4.0 software multiple times in most cases.

The only recourse I can think of is for you to either be lucky and have a
neighbor with this wheel who can loan you their CD, or call Microsoft and
see if they will send you one.
