GPL and MS Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel

Just a quick question...

I'm finally in the market for a wheel to use with Grand Prix Legends (I
guess a high GPLRank handicap will do that for ya), and I'm wondering if
the non-FF Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel has the same
problems re: framrate hit as the MS Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel - or
if there are any other problems with the wheel.

Thanks,

The Microsoft Precision Racing Wheel is fine with GPL, I use the pedals from
one.  Also the slowdown only comes with the USB version of the FF wheel (I
had one briefly but it went back to the shop), not the gameport version.
However the gameport version has a lag problem (or so i've read).

The MSPRW doesnt have any framerate hit.. I used one on my
P2 233... the framerate hit is purely from the FF drivers on the
MSFF..
The only problem I can think of with the wheel is that it has a
centering "notch" in the middle, and the grip is hard and
uncomfortable.

I've got the gameport version of the MSFF. I find that it *does* have
slowdown, but *doesn't* have lag (if you set the core.ini properly).

Yours confusedly,

Yeah, I've never owned the gameport version, so I was just passing on what
I'd heard.  Thanks for straightenning that up.  I do own a Precision Racing
wheel, and I did own the USB FF wheel though, before I took it back, so I'm
speaking from experience about those products.
Hope that didn't confuse anyone.

Thanks for your (and other's) response(s). Unfortunately...

I went out an purchased the MS wheel today. Plugged it in, and
immediately plunged from 36+fps to 20-24fps. Ouch...

There might be a couple of reasons why - see if any make sense (I'm not
the most knowledgeable about these things):

1) The wheel is a USB device. I don't know if the earlier Precision
Racing Wheels were.

2) The new drivers that are shipped with the wheel are the same ones
used for the MS FF wheel - or at least modified in the same way as those
drivers.

3) I'm running in software mode (yeech!), and *any* wheel connected
would cause a dramatic decrease in frame rates.

I'm probably gonna hook up a Voodoo3 sometime soon, so I'm hoping
that'll help. Ah well...

No need to be sorry after all :). Turns out all that I needed was a
system reboot. I'm quite surprised that MS didn't force a reboot after
installation - but I should've known that anyhow.

But the afternoon wasn't wasted - I got to watch just about every car in
the Le Mans tour at Nurburgring slip up in the mud. I don't feel so bad
now...

Sorry to hear that.  :(  The version i've got is USB and uses the same
drivers as the MS FF USB, but yet I get no slowdown.
One thing worth trying is to check the lead that connects into the
underneath of the pedals is in properly, because I had some problems with my
MSPRW at first due to this (like poor update from the pedals).
Like you say, it may just be because you are running in software mode
though.
