CPU upgrade advice needed

Hey all,
I'm currently running a PII350 w/128 megs of ram and am considering
upgrading to a Celery 466.  My question is this:  Since the Celery has a
smaller cache than the PII's, will my performance gain be worth the cost of
upgrading or should I try to find an old PII450 somewhere online?
                        Thanks! :-)

You can buy a P2/450 cpu for about $200 (www.pricewatch.com - check under
processors)

Don't upgrade yuor CPU now. Wait a year and buy a new computer.

I don't know what video card you are using, but, you might get more of a
performance increase with a new one. ie. voodoo 3 or tnt 2.  Most games
don't take full advantage of the PII's L2 cache so there shouldn't be too
much of a performance difference from what I understand if you get a celeron
processor.

*If* you do decide to get a new CPU, get a Celeron 366, bump the bus up to
100MHz and hey presto, a 550MHz CPU. You can get C366s guaranteed to hit 550
at 2 volts for a small premium (about 7 in the UK) if you're worried. Check
out alt.comp.hardware.overclocking for loads of success stories/advice. As
far as GPL and Celerons go, there's very little in it. I have a C300A o/c'd
to 504MHz, it pulls around 1 fps less than a PII450 o/c'd to 504. Seeing as
you can gain around 5 fps by overclocking your graphics card.... =)

In GPL I found that at the back of a 19 car grid at 1024x768 with most

PIII/450 ( the PIII will run happily at 558 and is magic ;-) )

One note on cache:  while the PII/III cache is larger than the
Celeron (512K versus 128K), the cache of the Celeron runs at full CPU
speed, while the PII/III run at 1/2 CPU speed.  Usually, that tends to
balance out, unless you have an application that benefits from
particularly large or fast cache (GPL seems fine either way).

There is one other point to consider here.  With a Celeron 300 and possibly 333
you at least have a shot a bumping your bus speed up to 100MHz and still have
the CPU run.  One poster says you can purchase Celeron 366s guaranteed to run
at 550, which in my opinion would be great.  However, once you get above that,
ie the 466 you suggest, you're stuck with a 66MHz bus speed, which does have an
effect on your system's performance in a lot of areas.  Personally, I would
look for a cheap P2 450 myself.  You get the faster bus, and you don't have to
*** around with overclocking and extra fans, etc.  JMHO.

While I agree in general with your remarks, this one is incorrect.  Virtually all
of these will run at 525MHz.  As long as a 75MHz bus is an option on your mobo ie
Abit.  Won't go no higher, though.  =-(

Ok all,
For better or worse I've made a decision.  I decided to go with the
PII 450 for now.  I should have it installed by tomorrow night so I can see
if I made the right decision or not.  If not I can always return it right?
:-)  The only thing is that if I return it I have to buy a new MB too, since
my BH6 only goes up to a P3 500. :-(  Then a week from now I hope to have a
new V3 3000 installed and working if my check from work shows up on time.
:-)
Thanks to all who responded, it definitely gave me some food for
thought. :-)

When you run a 75MHz bus, do you experience any problems with your PCI or AGP devices?
I've heard some bad shit about that, which is why I stick with either 66 or 100 so the
multipliers work out.

Your BH6 will handle the PIII 550's and 600's, you might need a bios update.
But it will run 550's and 600's just fine.

What about the K7?  15% faster than the PIII.  Good reviews at C-net.com.

Personally, I haven't had any problems yet.  But I have heard tell of some folks
experiencing problems with 75 MHz & 83 MHz bus settings.  Not sure just how common it is,
although it seems that AGP cards have more trouble than do PCI cards.  At least, as far as
I've read.  Didn't have any problems on an earlier 300A I had with both 75 and 83 MHz bus
either, as far as peripherals go.  Guess its a matter of trial and error.  =-)

Good luck with your PII450!  But, the BH6 is capable of running any Slot1
processor.  Just upgrade the BIOS.  You are not limited to a PIII500.  Or, as I
have now, any Socket370 with an adapter will work as well.
