OFF-TOPIC CPU/motherboard upgrade recommendations?

by Jo » Mon, 05 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I'm considering upgrading my aging Pentium 200 to a P2. As I
understand it I'll need a new motherboard - which one would you
recommend, and approximately how much should I expect to pay for it?

Another question - can I use the 16MB RAM chips from my current
motherboard in the new one? If not, how much should I expect to pay
for 64 MB of RAM? Is there any special kind I should get?

And lastly, what is the best P2 ship to get? I want something that
will last a while, but that is affordable as well (IOW, probably not
the latest, fastest version).

I'd recommend the ABIT BX6 or BH6, both of which are under $150.  You'll
not be able to use normal EDO SIMMs, so you'll need to upgrade to SDRAM
DIMMs.  Make sure to get PC100 CAS2 SDRAM which should be about $150 for
64MB (yes you can get cheaper RAM but you'll be glad you didn't).

You will probably want two get either a high 300 MHz chip, or a 400 MHz PII
chip. The ram should cost you about 80 for 64, or 70 for 2 32 meg chips.
Also, you will need to get a new case, so that is around 50-150 dollars. The
mother board you probably will want to get is the ABIT BX6 or BH6.

Thanks. I need a new case? The new motherboard won't fit in my old
one? If that is so I suppose I might as well buy it pre-built, i.e.,
case + motherboard + cpu + memory, then switch over my hard drives and
expansion cards. Starting to sound a bit more expensive than I was
hoping though, I'm practically buying a new computer - they sure don't
make these things very upgradeable!

The PII and Super socket 7 motherboards are ATX, not AT like you old case,
so you will need a new case with the right connectors.
