Upgrading CPU from 100mhz system?

by Ro » Thu, 20 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I have an AT&T Globalyst 375TPC class 3348 system with a factory set
100mhz Pentium. In the manual under "Upgrading the Processor" - ZIF
socket it states the following settings:

To reset the computer clock to accommodate a processor of higher
speed, locate the bright blue dip switches on the MPB of the computer.

DIP SWITCH BANK:

SPEED  SWITCH1  SWITCH2  SWITCH3  JP 2  PCI BUS

75mhz        On              Off              Off        Closed  25mhz
90mhz        Off              Off              Off        Closed  30mh
100mhz      Off              Off              On         Open   33mhz
120mhz      Off              Off              On         Open   30mhz

My Question is what speed is my system upgradable to actually? When I
called AT&T concerning this before they stated a 133mhz was tested and
ok and on another call said something about a 150mhz speed could be
achieved. Now when I called today, they (a different rep of course)
states that only a 120mhz is available/tested and safe and is not sure
if my board will ever support higher??? Does this sound correct? I was
under the impression that the Pentium/ZIF socket supported systems
were upgradable. A 20mhz jump doesn't sound like much to me? Anyone
safely added any higher processor to this board or anyone with
knowledge if it is a risk or not?

Can this be done by simply ordering a 133mhz, 166mhz, ect... chip from
intel?

Thanks,

Ron

Upgrading CPU from 100mhz system?

It's very likely that your motherboard will not support a processor
faster than a 120MHZ processor because it does not have a setting for a
faster clock rate. But I have never worked on a AT&T PC before, so I am
not completely sure. But what you can do for now is overclock your
current 100MHZ chip to 120MHZ to gain some perfomance for free. All you
have to do is set your motherboard as you had a 120MHZ chip and your
current cpu should be able to run at 120MHZ. If your CPU cannot be
overclocked, then you will just get a blank screen when you boot up, in
that case you can just set it back to 100MHZ and no harm done. Give it a
try! It worked for me, now I have a P120 system using a 100MHZ cpu:-)

Good luck!

Joe.
