CPU Upgrade Advice Needed

by Home » Thu, 29 Jun 2000 04:00:00

I am looking to upgrade my home computer with a new CPU & motherboard.  I
use the machine for GPL, N3, as well as some Office-type work from home.  My
CPU budget will be in the $200-$300 range.  Would I be better off with a
P3-600 (or thereabouts), an AMD K7 Athlon-750, or a Celeron?  I also have a
cable modem and a Voodoo3, if it makes a difference.  I would appreciate an
y advise.  Thanks

Luke

First of all, if you are going to go against a P3 over a Athlon, go with the
P3 cause they're just simply faster at the high end speeds.  THough, I would
recommend the new AMD Duron chip, which is like Intel's celeron.

Though, motherboards will run you costly as Intel boards go for 113 dollars
compared to AMD Athlon boards running darn near 200.

All in all, I would recommend a P3 with an ASUS Intel motherboard for
highest end performance, though DO NOT go with the latest RAMBUS technology
cause it has trouble and is often benched slower the PC133 Ram.

I just upgraded my Celeron 300A overclocked to 450 with a Celeron 566
overclocked to 875.  I have a abit BH6 motherboard V1.

The Wintune benchmark shows almost a 2X CPU performance increase.

The total cost for CPU, Fan, Slotket and shipping was $140.

Lucky sod, my Celeron 566 wont be stable at even 850, and thats at
1.85 volts. I'm going to try 1.90 today.

guaranteed overclockable cpu.

If you currently have a slot1 P2 motherboard capable of 100Mhz
FSB, then I suggest going with a P3-600E flipchip. This is a
socket 370 coppermine and you should be able to get it to work
using the IWILL slocket2 adapter. That is what I used to upgrade
from my old P2-450 (slot1) to my new P3-600E (socket 370).

You can read about the slocket2 adapter here:

I've heard that the success rate is about 80%, I took the chance.  Mine runs
stable at 1.65 volts. I have the latest bios for the BH6.  I did have major
problems with my SB Live soundcard crashing my system though.  After I
upgraded the drivers everything was OK.  Make sure you have all of the
latest drivers for your hardware.

FWIW I have the IWILL slotket and a Golden Orb fan. I hope you get yours
working Olav.

Try here http://www.pretestedcpus.com/
I`ve heard good reports on the overclocker newsgroups.
I`m tempted to order from the UK.
You know you will get a new stepping cpu and it will be guaranteed to run
much higher than the quoted manufacturers clock speed.

Hope this helps.

What speeds are you talking about? The Athlon beats the P3 hands down
according to every single article I've read, and that's why I chose it,
especially for racings sims, which require a killer FPU to get the required
high framerates. Not to be too cynical, but I feel that there's always been
an unfairly strong bias towards the Intel-based solutions irrespective of
actual performance benchmarks, probably because of the extent to which
they've flooded the market. If you've bought an Intel chip, you're likely to
be all for it. In any case, unless you're only interested in framerate
reports for video cards, your best bet is to read technical reviews from
respected sites like Anandtech and Tom's Hardware instead of this newsgroup,
with all due respect.

Hey, Intel wins out hands down cause AMD sucks!
Thought I would throw in my one intelligent post for the day.

That's the exact upgrade I am fixing to do for my BH6, darn celeron 300a has
been running so rock solid at 464 for the past year and a half, I kind of
hate to give it up - I figure it's time though, and can't beat the price.

Coppermine's are quicker that the Athlon's hands down...and they're cheaper
too!  When the new AMD's are out there to easily the AMD will be quicker,
and then when the new Intel is out the Intel will be quicker...

processors too!):

   Me, three.  :)

What vendors did/will you guys get your CPU & accessories from?  I
assume that's the 566a/Coppermine/0.18micron Celeron?  Any good places
to look for overclocking info on this combo?  Thanks a bunch!

This is where I got my 566 celeron, IWILL and Golden Orb.  They had the best
prices and I was very pleased with them.

I used the same overclocking procedure I used to overclock my 300A.

Would be a good source for the celeron's for overclocking.
